Pre-race routine:

Had a Cookies & Cream Powerbar and some Infinite before we left. Got to the race, got checked in and set up. Chatted with a few Team TRIumph members and went over a few things with my buddy who was doing his first race.
Event warmup:

Did a little swim warm-up. Still trying to get used to OWS so I thought a quick dip would be good. It was a short warm-up but I felt more comfortable toward the end. Breathing was calm and consistent, which I think is my biggest problem.
Swim
  • 10m 45s
  • 402 meters
  • 02m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

Horrible, horrible, horrible. Think this was my WORST swim ever. I suck. Makes me want become a duathlete.
What would you do differently?:

If I had it to do all over again, I think I might actually do some swimming instead of whatever is I was doing out there.
Transition 1
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

I think this went well. I had a good layout so everything was where I needed it to be. Had some trouble clicking in but I was rushing.
What would you do differently?:

Next time take more time to clip in. Will save me time in the long run.
Bike
  • 36m 52s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I've got to spend more time on the bike. I wanted to push it and I thought I was until I started getting passed. I don't know my limits yet, so I don't know what's pushing it and what's being a wuss. I think I was being a little bit of wuss on the bike. However, that kind of changed when I got passed by a group that was drafting off of one another. It pissed me off and I rode harder.
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder from the get go. Oh, and I would make sure I had fresh Infinite in my bottle. Letting it sit in the fridge for a week or so is not a good idea. It kind of spoiled and so I didn't have anything to drink on the bike. With the amount of lake water I swallowed during the swim, this was not good.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Had one foot out but didn't time it right so I had to run with one shoe on and one shoe off.
What would you do differently?:

Get both feet out before I get off the bike.
Run
  • 25m 8s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

HR was way too high coming off the bike. I had to walk for about 20 secs to try to get it under control. Kept a slow pace until I felt better and started to pick it up, just before the turn around.
What would you do differently?:

More brick workouts so I'm in better shape off the bike
Post race
Warm down:

Held off puking after the finish. My stomach was a mess.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Horrible, horrible swim. Being a wuss on the bike. Heart almost exploding at the start of the run. Being a crappy triathlete in general.

Event comments:

I'm demoralized today because my buddy who did his first race beat me by 5 minutes. He passed me on the bike and I couldn't stay with him. Knew that if I didn't stay with him on the bike, I'd lose him on the run since he's a faster runner than I am. I'm feeling sorry for myself and I'm sure it will only last a day or two but it still sucks.

Try not to be so hard on yourself.  You had a busy week with your test on Friday.  It will only get better for you in these races.

Hey, I think you looked great out there! Remember, we do this for fun And it looked like you were having fun

Oh yeah, Slake has a great picture of you, almost getting ill.

No, no, no...Colesdad has it wrong. If you want to see a truly horrible swim, look up my report and you'll feel much better. You'll wonder, "Gee, what'd he do? Walk in the water?" And no, believe it or not, I actually swam for much of it. I still think the swim was measured short.

Kevin... good race...  you are being a little hard on yourself, but i see where you are coming from, i knew you wouldn't be happy with that swim considering all the training you have been doing..   Let's use this race as a benchmark and go from there, remember NJ State is the big one...  This race was just to figure some things out.

Sorry the race didn't go as you had planned/hoped. It happens to everyone, so just put it behind you and start looking forward to the next one. Take with you the few things you learned, and you'll be great at NJ!
