Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4 took a quick shower and got the car packed. Not too hungry but forced the normal pre race meals down. Drove to my moms to drop my son off and realized I was going to be much later than I wanted to be. I had to have Cadence do some work on my bike when I got there so I was starting to stress a bit.
Event warmup:

Ran around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get organized and body marked. Bike maint...etc... Set up shop right next to Stephen DelMonte in transition. Pretty ironic and quite amusing as we are always so close to each other in these races in our results. Broke the ice a little. Took the bus over to the boat house and then stood in line for 15 mins waiting to take a 1 min sh!T! Oh well. Such is life! Got the wet suit on crossed the timing mat and swam for about 5 minutes before the start of the race.

Comments:

Not sure what is going on with my swim. In April and May I was swimming so much better than I am now. I feel like everything and anything that could go wrong will when I get going in a swim these days.

I decided to start way left along the Kelly Drive side this year. I remember hearing John Kenney talk last year about the line he took and found it interesting that he swam so far away from the bouy line. This strategy worked great. I was all alone on the left side and had virtually a straight line to the last bouy. This worked great for a few reasons. Swimming the bouy line probably was 25-50 meters more in distance and in addition to that the waves in front of us were all bunched up on that line. I had no one to swim through via the line I took. When I got under the bridge I saw one guy in my wave in front of me about 12.5 meters ahead. I decided to just take it easy in to the tran area. But overall this was another terrible swim. I can not get situated with my breathing and I never got settled. The first few hundred meters was great but then it just all went to he!!. I actually swam backstroke more than once in hopes to catch my breath. I guess its better than not swimming at all!

Find my stroke!

First time in a tri where my strap on one of my shoes came out of the loop hole. So I had one foot in and the left was out. I finally fished it through the hole at about 5 MPH and then got moving again. I thought I was going to have to stop. Motha Fuk!

Nothing...stuff like this happens!

Comments:

The plan was to back off on the first loop a little and to be ready to hammer the second. I think I did a good job of this. The gearing on the Cervelo was much better then last years bike. I never came out of the saddle once on any of the climbs and spun easily up every hill on the course. Very happy with this. I almost enjoyed it a little.

Other than that I will say that the key to this course is knowing when to push it and knowing when not to. Also gear changes is huge. Riding in the correct gears makes all of the difference.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing

Comments:

Pretty solid here. Shoes were on in no time and I was off. Broke the clip on my race belt so I just decided to tuck each side of the belt into my shorts.
What would you do differently?:

Not break my race belt.

Someone said that when your hurt why burn up the matches you have left by senslessy running when you don't have the fitness...I agree. So I only ran 2 times since Eagleman. In addition to not running since the half my ITB flared up early last week to the point where literally I was not racing as of Friday night before this race. I woke up in the AM feeling better and decided to go.

Off the bike I knew I was 2nd in my age group. I felt pretty solid for mile 1 and ran 6:05. I decided to just stick with it and feel the hurt. Got out to the 1.5 turn around and watched my buddy Marc run past me. Same thing at Eagleman but this time I was actually running.

Got out to the back end of the course and was still feeling pretty solid. Mostly false flats all the way up to the Art Museum so I kept things in check and just backed off the pace a hair.

Saw Dan from my Tri club out there giving support that was nice. Also scouting who was running up on me from behind. Thanks for that...

Hit the turn for home and realized it was all down hill. Saw Mike Egan up the road about 100 yards and just poured it on. Caught him and felt good as I was in 2nd again. I knew I had a fast runner coming behind me and when I saw the 6 mile mark I just put my head down and gutted it out.

Pretty happy with this run but as I said earlier...you only have so many matches. I burned them all up here I think...

What would you do differently?:

Not get hurt this year!

Event comments:

One thing I will say. I love to see lots of folk come out and participate but honestly this course is technical and very tight. The 2nd loop of the bike course is like the Tour de Philly but with people who look like they just sat on their bikes for the first time. Rumor has it that they are going to expand this race to 5000 people. Well the next rumor you are going to hear is that if that happens I am out....

Mike you continue to show how REAL HARD WORK pays off.  15th overall, 1st AG, and beating many pro's is just an incredible showing.

From where I was watching the race I so many an almost accident and couldn't imagine how bad it will be if they expand.

Awesome result.  Especially with the injury issue and just coming off Eagleman.  Congrats on the AG win.

Great race Mike!  Your swim may be 'off' by your standards, but I'm pretty sure it was 20:35 (not 25:35).

Hope you get some time to heal up and maybe replace some of those matches for later this year.

And you can count me out at 5,000 people too.  2,000 was pushing it too far already (several "needless" accidents that I saw).

Great race as usual. I was one of those needless accidents. Course was much more crowded this year. It was much worse for those of us in the later waves. Stay healthy and good luck with your season.

Great Job Mike....

Sorry Team TRIumph didn't stick around for your award, but Katiey told everyone your name wasn't on the sheet for awards (or something like that) and you were leaving... so we left too....

Glad to hear you did get an award... Congrats... great race.

Great work! I'm glad you were able to have such a solid race after all the injury issues. Oh, and I hope that rumor is not true, because I was planning on making Philly my 'A' race next year, but I won't be if they increase the amount of people allowed to register.

Congrats!
