Subject: HR at LT increase/decrease question

Question - Does ones HR at LT increase, decrease, or stay abou the same for a fit person over short periods of time?

Im in a discussion with my BIL who has done 2 or 3 LT field tests in the last 6 or so months.  He has been very fit all his life.  His HR stays about the same for each test.  I keep telling him I believe that this would be normal given his background.  What he should see however is that his pace (and power on the bike) should/will increase during those test.

So, Am I correct or am I missing something here?

thanks.

In general, yes that is correct.  The HR will stay in a similar range.

What changes (or what SHOULD change) is the pace at which that HR and the LT occurs.

It also depends on if you are training the LT/AT system also. If you are only doing low intensity base work then you can actually see the HR at LT go down. As a general rule though it will stay in a smallish (5 beat or so) range, and you should see your pace @ LT increase if you are training correctly.
