It's tough to say sometimes..Neil Young/Bobby Dylan/Elvis Costello all have pretty bland stretches - Anyone remember ReAcTOr and Trans? - followed by years of incredible creativity. I think it's true that 'classic' acts have a much harder time getting people to listen to their newer stuff..Folks just want the nostalgia trip.

My best idea for the list would be Elvis P. Two great years followed by, well, it was generally pretty bad..

Yeah, stuff like "Suspicious Minds", "Burning Love", "In The Ghetto", etc. was all cr*p.

I would argue that Fat Elvis was even better than skinny Elvis because he wasn't just ripping off what many black artists had been doing before him. He was actually fusing Gospel and Rock 'n' Roll and his Vegas days were spectacular (when he wasn't all doped up.)

Yeah, google "68 comeback special" as a starting point.

I can't believe I am actually putting this one on here as I am a HUGE fan....John (Cougar) Mellancamp....His original stuff in the 80's was great stuff....I need a Lover, Jack and Diane, Smalltown, Ain't Even Done with the Night, Hurt So Good...etc....then somewhere along the way he lost the songs about rock 'n roll and sex and came out with (good music) but all political songs...Peaceful World, Rain on the Scarecrow, American Dream.....I saw him in concert in '89 and it was an awesome 2 hour show....saw him again a couple of years ago and there was too much politics in the music and when he talked....my sister saw him a couple years back in Indy and during his political rambling a couple people told him to "shut up and sing"....

...and I'll agree on U2....I have never been on board with the music, and then Bono doing his thing...good intentions but it is too much at some point.....

Seen it several times - The parts where the band is on stage in the middle of the audience was pretty great. When he was so inclined, he brought it. Trouble is, he wasn't usually inclined. I do have a couple of 'Memphis Sessions' cds lying around that strongly hint at what he could have been doing with his time, in which case he would not have been my nominee.

Best ever movie review:

NYT in the mid 60's on one of Elvis' flicks - Just one line:

'Not up to his usual standard.'

For me I would say Metalica.  In their early years they did interviews saying any band doing videos was selling out to the corporations and  MTv.  Along comes "And justice for all" and they do a video.  Ok, acceptable since One was a cool song based on a cool movie, based on a cool novel.  The "Black Album" they released what, ten videos, produced by the same guy that did Def Leppard's videos?  Then they have an absolutely terrible double live album, followed by a couple more lousy albums accompanied with whining about how the evil "pirates" are costing them so much money.

Bah, I saw them live five or six times.  Never again.

Pearl Jam. Ten was a great album, vs. was o.k. and then complete crap since. Things went downhill when Eddie Veder started hanging out with Neil Young.

Another band I hate to put on the list:

The Beastie Boys.  Loved the earlier stuff...new stuff way to political for me.  Seems like a band that kinda lost it a bit.

indeed. lars ulrich is a whiny little troll. i tried watching their documentary "some kind of monster" a couple years ago and had to turn it off b/c lars was so detestable.

i read that chris cornell is collaborating with timbaland. no, thankyou.

aerosmith when they did the cryin/crazy/amazin videos with alicia silverstone.

garth brooks when he did that chris gaines album.

GNR when they did an $4M video, or when axl had a new album coming out for a decade and then showed up a tired, old man on the mtv music awards with a guy with a bucket on his head.

I'm right with you on Aerosmith.  I always said they did their best music back when they were all on drugs and couldn't stand each other. Smile

...and I'll agree on U2....I have never been on board with the music, and then Bono doing his thing...good intentions but it is too much at some point.....

This response is not directed any specific poster.  Just a general thought.  I just never understood this attitude.  The dude has made millions of $ making music and for years now (i.e. not a passing fad for him) he has tried to do some real good in the world...and people dislike him for it?  THAT BASTARD! I suppose it'd be better if he just pi$$ed it all away on drugs, cars and hookers?

I did a bad job of making my point....I think it is fantastic he does what he does.....It is how what he does is rolled into his music and how it makes his music soooo great. It isn't. It sucks. But what he does for helping the worlds poor is fabulous.....sorry. I was trying to be brief and it came across wrong....There comes a point at which they need to be showing Bono and what he is doing without his awful music to go along with a video documentary.......

Again, was not directed at you specifically....a few on this thread have said similar things and this attitude goes way beyond BT.  Shoot, on South Park a year or two ago there was an entire episode devoted to how Bono was actually a giant piece of poo that had taken human form.  ;-)  But I DO disagree with you on the music.  There have been a few misses post "Joshua Tree" but their last album is great IMO.

``Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.''

"Why do you have all of that duct tape in the closet"

"To tape things"

good flick...

The Cure. I don't remember the album but when I was a teenager I remember them saying that if they ever had a song go to number one on the pop charts they would disband. Like a year later they hit number one and started work on a new, sucky album.

BTW, I can't stand Bono or U2!!

Well, technically The Cure never reached No. 1 on the "Pop" Charts, which is really called the "Billboard Hot 100."

They did reach No. 1 a few times on whatever the "Modern Rock Tracks" Chart is.

I'm gonna dip my toes in the water here and say STYX.

Many of you probably never liked STYX in the first place, but they came on strong when I was just hitting my early grade school/middle school prime.  They always were a tad manic-depressive with the soft songs with hard beats later, like LADY and COME SAIL AWAY.  Still, I like(d) it.   Whatever album had BABE on it (Cornerstone?) was the end, the sappy stuff won out.

Don't you be hatin' on "Mr. Roboto" now. It's the last song we play at the office to close out the work week every Friday afternoon. I don't even know why. It's just tradition.

scoobysdad - 2008-06-26 9:38 AM In this thread, we're looking for bands that started out with a ton of promise and integrity, released a great album or three, then for whatever reason ("new" creative direction, old age, change of line-up) became a silly, irrelevant, overblown or just plain bad version of themselves. For bonus points, cite the exact moment when they jumped the shark. Perhaps it was the release of a certain single, album or maybe even a specific concert or appearance on a TV show. Here's a few to get started: Stevie Wonder????
WHAT? Shut your mouth. Stevie being on this list is almost sacreligious.

And even PUMP was mostly thanks to Desmond Child.
