Pre-race routine:

Very FIRST tri today! Got up at 4:00am. Had Oatmeal, a banana and a piece of string cheese. Tired. Didn't sleep more than 4 hours the night before. Kept thinking I didn't set the alarm. Had everything packed up the night before. Left at about 4:30 to head to Geneva. Am directionally challenged, so missed a turn, thank god Joe Runner(Terri) was going to the same race, she helped me get back on track and met at Wally Word and drove in together.
Event warmup:

Wetsuit on and went in the water to get a feel for how cold it was. Not too bad actually. Almost threw up from nerves, but Joe Runner and pjgrande were there to calm me down a bit!
Swim
  • 34m 1s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was nice that we got to tread water a bit before our wave start. THat got me used to the water and not so freaked out. When I started the swim, my breathing was a bit off/shallow, but I did breast stroke for about 100 yards, then calmed myself down and just went. Thought I would never get to that turn around bouy. I kept thinking it was closer than in was. Ran over a couple of dead fish. Yuk! Coming back was really shallow. Kept moving back towards the bouy so I would not hit my hand on the bottom of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Stay a bit closer to the bouy. I didn't want to get kicked on the first OWS I had ever done (yes, hadn't ever done one until race morning). I was happy with my time. Had no clue as to how it was going to go.
Transition 1
  • 04m 11s
Comments:

Hadn't ever done one before. Had all of my stuff out. Took my time getting myself dried off, ate a clif bar, got shoes, socks , sunglasses and helmet on. And off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Having a good time.
Bike
  • 1h 25m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.54 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was great. Enjoyed the scenery. Peaceful that day. Passed some and was passed by some. I am most comfortable with the bike. My low back was hurting a bit my the end.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

Was concerned about transitioning to the run. The running is hardest for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 03m 38s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

The run,I was worried about. That is the hardest for me. Found a woman who was looking to chit-chat with people. I slowed down a bit and we talked the entire way. Mally is her name and she was a god send!!! We walked thru the water stations but otheriwse ran the entire time. I wouldn't have been able to do that by myself. My 2 kids, Jack and Parker (girl) ran thru the finish line with me!!! That was the highlight besides completing my first ever triathlon!!!
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on running solo.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got food and talked with hubby, kids and other BT'ers

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was tired

Event comments:

Had a great time!!!! Loved the SWAG and will do it again next year!

It did, thanks!  I loved every minute of it...well, almost.

Where in Madtown are you?  Just moved from there a year ago after being a lifelong resident.  I love Madison.  Miss it, big time!

I have Madison listed because no one would really know the little town where I planted roots 15 years ago, which is Marshall, 20 miles east.

Wow - great job and great report!  You did so awesome for your first OLY.  I know what you're saying about the lack of sleep and nerves for you first time.  Believe it or not it does get better with more races.  Sorry we didn't meet up as a BT group but maybe next year.  Again, great job - what's next?

Thanks!  I was quite pleased with the whole thing!!!  Good to know on the lack of sleep.  I was hoping that it would get better after a few...at least now I know. :-)  Would love to meet up next year.  Hopefully I won't look like the one that is going to hurl next year.

I am doing anskin in a couple of weeks and then the Lake Zurich or nka Bangs Lake Olympic too!  How about yourself??
