I am starting to think that I may want to do this.  I heard that the course is better than the ride we did on Saturday.  Plus, I really like the bike jerseys and can't wear one if I don't do the ride.

Anyone else in or have any thoughts on the ride?

Where?

This sounds like sweaty-fun.

Can someone post a link?

I've wanted to do this one for years, but still fear the heat and "incessant wind" as the race website describes it, plus I'm just not confident in my ability to do a century again this soon.  Add in the fact that my anniversary is the day before, when I would be traveling to the race site, and I'm thinking this one may be another "wait till next year."

I am planning to do this race. I did a short route of the race when I was a kid, and I'm excited to go back! It's a Texas tradition, everyone needs to do it once. If you are planning to go, I recommend getting a room ASAP. I have had friends that had to stay in OK in years before!

Have fun! I want to do this one.. but I think the HH100 8 days before IMKY, is probably not considered tapering. But, you are right.. the jerseys are pretty cool...

If there is a rally to do, this would be it.  I had an absolute blast last year, as this was my first century.  I have a race report floating around somewhere, but it's a really flat course with thousands of cyclists.  I would love to do it if it wasn't so far away.  You'll probably want to book a hotel early, or you could camp out at the site.  Lots of people just camp.

I am really thinking about this!

I haven't signed up for this one yet but I had this one planned already.  I'm supposed to do this one with my dad.  We were planning on driving in the morning of the event.  It's about 1hr 45 mins from my house.  Oh yeah, and the jerseys are really cool, I saw a couple this last weekend.

I have done this the last two years, undecided about this  year - but it is a fun and well-supported ride. Another lodging option is the "host homes" mentioned on the website. That's what I used, and it worked out pretty well. For 35 or 40 dollars, got a nice place to stay, dinner and breakfast; and was able to come back after the race and shower/change before heading back home.

One other thing regarding the heat...  try to minimize the rest stops in the early morning when it is reasonably cool. You'll be happy to have covered some ground before it gets in the 90's and 100's. And that also reduces the risk you'll miss the cutoff at Hell's Gate (approx mile 63, normally closes at 12:30 but can close earlier if too hot).

And yes, the jersey's are cool

I did it back in 2006. Here is my RR:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

Here are some highlights from my RR:

Ramanda Inn Limited (3209 Northwest Frwy, US. HWY 287- I am giving you the address so you know to NEVER stay at THAT hotel).

After we check-in, we promptly leave and hit the Expo center around 4:30 PM. There is this HUGE line for packet pickup. I get in line and Diane goes to register. She got in/out a lot quicker than I did. *Note to self- Do not pre-register.*

Yes, people camp out. But imagine 100 degree heat in a tent. I have heard it's a pretty bad experience.

The roads are better than the Waxachie ride. Unless they are freshly repaved with chip seal.

I was going to go back in 2007, but passed simply because I couldn't afford it. It was going to be a $300 weekend (have to book hotel rooms for a minimum of 2 nights, and they jack up the prices for crap-tastic rooms), so I passed.

I think you gotta do it at least once. I'm sure you and Steve could make the 100, as long as they don't close Hell's Gate early (like they did in 2006). Even then they route you to a 75 mile route.

I'm in for this one. It sounded like a better idea when I was tapering for the marathon then it does now that I'm training in the heat! I'm VERY nervous about it, but I've heard a lot of good things about it, so I'm trying to think happy thoughts

Of course, there is still the incessant wind thing to worry about

HHH100 is a great ride.  If my work schedule cooperates this will be my 5th year.

Book your hotel NOW if you are considering this ride! Most of the area restaurants start getting crowded around 5:30 on Friday night.

There are a few hills at the beginning of the ride. The rest if fast and flat! If you watch your hydration and salt levels you should be fine. Towards the end of the ride the rest stops will have pickles which work great if you are start to feel bad. Every rest stop has medical teams that can help you with anything you need. Know your body and listen to it.

5 miles from the finish there is a bar offering free beer and food.

This is my favorite organized ride!!

I did this ride last year and it was worth the trip. I had never done any long road riding up until the weekend before. I did tons of running and mountain biking plus adventure racing. I was asked to do this and thought I should try a training ride first. I borrowed a road bike from a friend (steel Lemond) and went and got it fit to me at my LBS. I drove to Houston and rode with the guys that asked me to do HH100 - we rode from Downtown Houston to Galveston taking the back roads. 52 miles and I felt good, so I said, "yeah, I'll try to HH100 with you guys." One weekend later I did the 100 mile route.

I got the bike set up with new tubes and tires and a check up before hand. It paid off - I was the only one of the three that didn't have mechanicals during the HH100. My running and adventure racing paid off with a better understanding of hydration and salts than my partners, too. I took electrolyte tabs for mid-race and enough gels for one every 12 miles. With 2 water bottles filled with endurolyte mix and a 50 oz. Camel back loaded with water - I was able to stay good for the 100 miles. Time was slow and steady to keep me able to finish - which I did. One of my partners didn't - he had to quit at mile 78 due to mechanical issues (he was the real bike rider, too) so we are all going back this year so he can get the job done.

The only tough part was a windy section in 80-88 mile range. The gas station with free beer and bbq just before the end is enough to bring you back. They are the nicest people in the world.

If I did it with only one real road ride under my belt prior to the race and on a borrowed bike - then I feel confident that anyone on BT who has the desire to do it, can.

Also, take money and go the day before - they have one of the best shopping set-ups anywhere. Great deals on everything to do with bikes/tris.

I've decided to ride it because they have some of the coolest jerseys, and I've just got to have one.  That's good enough reason don't you think?

Also it's about time I did a 100 mile ride.   -- Haven't signed up yet though.

I did it in 2006 and managed to make it through Hell's Gate before it closed. I'm not sure if that was a good thing or not. It was really hot after that. I'm planning on doing it this year, just have not signed up yet.
