Subject: Trek 1600: Am I getting a good deal?
Hi everyone. I'm new here and new to tri's. I'm also new to road bikes and so I feel a little lost right now! I found a 2007 Trek 1600 WSD at my LBS for $995. It has all the components shown here:http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2007/archive/1600wsd. Basically it's a 105 gruppo with an Ultegra derailleur.I went into this whole ordeal figuring I would get a Trek 1.2, a Specialized Dolce or a Giant OCR3 in order to be budget friendly, but I feel like this is a much better bike and that it might be worth it to go over a bit. At the same time, I'm a little worried that I'll buy too much bike and end up not even liking road biking. Of course the guys at the bike shop are telling me that it's worth it and a great deal, but I'd really like to hear some unbiased opinions. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

The 1600 is a much better bike than the 1.2.  Ideally, you want to stay away from Shimano Sora components on a bike, as there is supposed to be a clear difference between them and 105 or better (Ultegra, Dora Ace) components.  The general recommendation is to get a bike with all 105 or better components.  In terms of buying a bike, getting last year's model gets you a better bike for a lot less.  That bike probably retailed for at least $1300 at one point.  So it's a great deal.  I have an 2006 Trek 1500 (equivalent to the later 1600) and was fine on it for an Ironman.  The 1600 would be able to grow with you more than the other bikes would.  Just make sure it fits.

I own a Trek 1600, and love it.  You are getting a great price, and if it's a local shop, then that's even better for the tune ups and such.  The only issue I had was the crank (which on mine was not even 105) but when I took it to my shop, they put a 105 on it.  (It was under warranty.)  I love my 1600, and I am going to use it for a 1/2 IM in October.  Did I say I loved it?    I do.  It's not a "race" bike by any means, but she has done her part for me as I work on the engine, which is more important than the bike anyway at my beginner level.

Thanks for your responses!

I have no experience with road bikes and really don't know what one is supposed to feel like, so your input is very valuable to me. I'm also quite terrified of them but I sure as heck better get over that!

 Thanks again!

Key thing does the bike fit you? A ast year model they might want to move and if it doesn't fit and is a great deal is really isn't a great deal.

How did they figure if the bike fit you are not? They should do some measuring of you to make sure it fits. There are various methods of fitting but basic one should take 30 minutes or so.

Yes, it fits wonderfully. I just wanted to make sure I was getting the most bang for my buck.

I actually bought it last night - and I LOVE it! I'm obsessed. So far I've only gotten to zoom around the neighborhood a bit, but I feel like a kid againLaughing
