From the 60s-70s, there are a number of artists that deserve a second listen. One is T. Rex, whose guitar driven, pi$$ off, trash rock (with incredibly catchy hooks) would appeal to fans of The Strokes and The Horrors.

Also, Nick Drake, whose melodic, understated music has a chilling, somber beauty that points to bands like Fleet Foxes, Iron & Wine, and Bon Iver. Sidebar: both Marc Bolan (aka T.Rex) and Nick Drake, died tragically in the mid-70s.

From the 80s, I think The Chills from New Zealand, and The Chameleons from the UK are great bands that both have influence on artists like Interpol, The Antlers, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.
