Alright, so what's with the socks? Seriously?? I mean even if it's pouring, replacements are gonna get wet in minutes.

Aren't all of your long runs done in socks already tested? Do you ever change socks in the middle of a run?

I really don't get the paranoia need for an extra pair.

At IM Moo 06 all I wanted out of my run SN bag was dry socks. I spent miles dreaming about the warm goodness of dry socks. Putting them on was like crawling in to a warm bed on a cold night. mmmmmmmm....dry socks.

Yeah - they got wet again, but I can't over state the lift I got from dry socks.

LaurenSU02 - 2008-07-02 3:02 PM I don't plan on stopping at either SN, but both will be hugely stocked (I tend to be overprepared). Run SN will have some food stuff I know I can handle should I run into issues out there, a change of socks (yes, I know I might lose a $15 investment), possibly a long-sleeve top, but prob not since I am comfortable running in shorts and tank top down to the 50s, a mini stick of body glide if I can find some, spare shoe laces, band aids, and maybe a few others, but I will begin to show my nuttyness if I write them.

You know that your list will start growing the longer you taper

I had a big box of Mike & Ikes in mine (along with a bunch of other stuff I didn't take). I took two big handfuls and ran away like a small happy child. Best. Decision. Ever.

I've never run more than 12.93 miles. Not sure what will happen out there that day. Also, I get paranoid one could rip, etc. I get very paranoid about a lot of things. I always even carry an extra tri suit in my transition bag, for small races...just in case something happens to mine during the race. I always always have extra shoelaces. I don't expect to use the socks, just have them in there just in case. I have two pairs of "Long run socks" and both will be there on race day, just in case.

If there was a short downpour that really soaked my feet, I would be wanting to change socks just to reduce the weight I was carrying around on each foot.  If it was steadily raining then I would agree that they would be wet again soon anyway so I wouldn't bother changing.

Other than that slight possibility, then yeah, no way I'm changing my usual routine.

I think there was a thread on slowtwitch a few years ago where a guy suggested trying to mess with the volunteers' heads by including all kinds of bizarre stuff in the SN bags - a bucket of fried chicken, some condoms, malt liquor, and so on...

I'm with you on the questoning the socks.  At IMLP last year by the time I got to run SN there's was no way I wanted to even think about taking my shoes off until I hit the finish line.  Not sure once they were off I'd want to put them back on again.    Only things I had in my bag was a throw away long sleeve dri fit and some extra endurolytes.  Didn't grab either.

I keep my run special needs bag stocked as a contingency, not to depend on it.

I have extra electrolyte capsules, extra GUs, extra sunblock.

Last April at IMAZ I dropped my pill bottle as I was running (worked loose from my shorts pocket), but noticed and immediately picked it up. If I had not noticed until miles later, at least I had some in the RNS bag.

Now that's funny.
