Subject: Anyone else work a high intensity job?

I work in Landscape construction so on a day to day basis i am shoveling, raking, building things with bricks and stone. So im pretty beat after a day of that, and then throw in a run and a swim and thats about all ive got.

Does anyone else work a labor job? If so, how does it effect your training?

Im just looking for others to share the pain!

Does the Army count?

Too many days I'm too physically and mentally exhausted to do real tri training. I try to just get some weights and abs in, as running or biking is out of the question due to time constraints. I'm not deployed so it could be worse.

In my previous life I was in Grounds Management (Turf Management/Sports Field) and it was very hard with the long hours to get runs in. However, the job was a great workout on its own.

Firefighter - I regularly swim before shift and I try to workout and run during my shift (as we have a few basic pieces of equipment) but between 911 calls, being up all night regularly for medical runs and the infrequent fire I feel whipped after shift.

But the morning after shift is the only time I have 'guaranteed free time'  So I have to go for it.  Sometimes it ends up being short runs (this morning) Other times I go for long runs.

So I share your pain about feeling too tired to workout sometimes.  But just like some race days, we gotta push through it to gain that endurance... right? Right! Right?

I was once a mason, laying concrete block foundations for houses for 10 hours a day in the summer heat.  I once came home at 7pm, tripped on the step leading into the kitchen, the cool tile floor felt so good on my face that I just fell asleep.  Bigfuzzydad was kicking me at 6am the next morning, "wake up Doug.  Time to get out to the job site for work.  Here's breakfast for the car."

And it was back to work.  That was pretty intense.  These days I just shine a chair with my butt and tell other people what to do.  Pretty lame when you think about it.

I used to do some siding, which can be quite intense when your working with crap like hardiplank all day. I found if I tried to get a workout in before work it seemed to go alot better, so you could try that.

I too work in an high intenseity job. We, my hubby and I do home remodeling. So it is tile, drywall and carpentry all day and try to get workouts in. Ex; this last few weeks we have been re-habbing a very large tile pool deck....so it is out in the sun all day and being really tired. So what I do is just try to workout when I can during the day. Either before or during the work day. Like if I have a break to wait for tile to set or a delivery, my extremely understanding Hubby, waits while I go work out and then come back to work. But it is hard and sometimes my workouts do suffer. Good luck to you.

Tyler,
Subject: RE: Anyone else work a high intensity job?
umm well I teach water fitness classes...and I try to do the movements as little as possible and teach on the deck...but I usually start dancing while I'm up there to kill the time. The rest of the day I walk around on the gym floor and tell people you can't burn fat and I play on this website. But I'm looking for a "real job," any openings around the Tyler/Dallas/Cedar Creek area let me know soon, I am moving out to Cedar Creek Lake area to be near where I work now to save on gas and I'll be able to ride my bike to work I  hope (If I don't hit anymore cars out there or they hit me, its a big "drug" arena.)

A couple of years ago I got rid of my business and went to work for Costco.  Most of the time I am stocking which usually means humping some water or gatorade cases.   The benefit is that I don't have to go to work until usually around 2pm which allows me time to get a workout or two in.  Its funny that you ask that question because I was wondering how much the physical labor in the evening affects my training.   I think it does come into play, especially the next morning when I want to get up for a morning swim.

Software, desk work, client visits, software installation, training, fielding tech calls, 4 or 5 state travel (driving).

I am brain-dead at the end of the day.

I play poker. I basically lie to people and try to figure out if they're lying back.

Edited to take out a lawyer joke because I know we have some on this site.

I'm in breast surgery all day.  Well not all day, but usually two/three cases a day.  I'm not the surgeon, I'm the sales/clinical consultant so it's more taxing on the brain...but at this point it comes pretty easy.

When I was in the Navy I was a steam engineer.  In the persian Gulf the enginering plant would be in excess of 120 degrees.  Our stay times were 3 hours but the CO had us all on waivers to be down there for four hours at a time.  I use to complete an entire 100 oz camelback each time I went down and still wouldn't have to pee.  It was liking working in a steam room at the gym.  So you can imagine I use to shed lbs at sea for sure.  But I still had to get my workouts in.  After a while you aclimate and your body gets used to it.  definetly a HTFU job.  In fact once I left deployment to switch jobs and when I landed in San Diego I went to the gym that night....I remember sitting in the sauna and not sweating.  I was asking people around me if "it was always this cold in here" and they thought I was crazy as they were drenched in sweat.

I am a Firefighter, so I sit around all day playing dominos and cards. Well, that seems to be what the general public thinks anyway. I am on an an Advanced Life Support engine company, and on the Heavy Rescue Team, so I never kno what the day will hold in store. High angle rescue, Trench, Swift Water, Confined Space, Car wrecks involving extrication, or just a good old fashion structure fire. ( Whew... now where are those dominos again???)

Commercial Diver, I have been working underwater for the past 19 years. I used to be on the construction end (bridge and pier repair) spending up to 6hr under the water. Now I do underwater bridge inspection for many State and Federal agency. A typical day I spend about 2hrs in the water. It’s a great job, but working in the TRI State area (NY,NJ,CT) sometimes can be nasty and the winters are brutal.

I'm in Automotive assembly, and it's a very fast paced (no union). It's hard at first but once you get used to working out while tired you get used to it. I usually feel better after a workout then if I take the day off.
