Question for Larry.

Will we be able to park our bikes in the transition area overnight on Saturday?

As an aside, I am really looking forward to this race. It is my first A race of the year, and I'm anticipating that it will be well worth the drive from Va Beach.

As for my goals? The usual - to finish in the top 1/3 of my age group.

No...no leaving bikes overnight, but the parking situation is very good so you park pretty close to transition. One lot is right across the road and the other is about 500 yards down the road.

Just try to get there early, 2,300 cars, all arriving within an hour and a half of one another make for slow going once you get into the park.

Bob, although I did a HIM, I still can't swim. At Black Bear, I had two people behind me. Last year at NJ State, there were also maybe 2-3 people behind me. I could see the kayakers starting to pick up the buoys behind me... very encouraging. On the other hand, it all makes for a fun ride, lots of passing.

Well, glad to hear I'm not the only one that's happened to! One year at the FIRMman Half (up in Rhode Island...very good race) I was in the last wave. It was an ocean swim with the tide coming in against us. After rounding the first turn I buried my head and swam my off. The buoys were to my right so when I breathed I could see the turn buoy so I didn't need to sight. After about ten minutes I started thinking "I'm STILL about even with the dam buoy"! So I gave it pretty much all I had for another five minutes...HOLY SH**! I'm still at the buoy. The tide must be pushing harder than I can swim!"
i'm thinking I've been swimming for about 25-30 minutes and I can't get past the first buoy! I can't believe I drove six hours for a DNF on the first leg of the race.

Finally I look up and one of the lifeguards is on a surfboard towing the buoy toward the swim exit! I don't think anyone's ever been so happy to be such a moron.

kagoscuba - 2008-07-11 12:49 PM As this is my first tri, I'll be happy with a sub 2hr time.  If I average all of my training times and add 2 minutes per transition, I could finish as quickly as 94 minutes, but I don't want to set those types of expectations for my first tri.  The one thing going for me is all of my run and bike training has been hills except for bricks, where I've been riding to a track.
If you've been training to 94 minutes on hills you should do well on the course. I'm heading over to do the run/bike course tomorrow am at 7:00 with a few guys who are also doing the race from my work.

Thanks, I am certainly hoping to do well.    It's actually my third priority beyond, don't quit and don't drown.

How was the layout?  Was it as flat as advertised?

I ride and run this course a lot as its literally my back yard. Its very fast and smooth. There are a couple of subtle hills here and there, but nothing killer. Its a really great course and you will enjoy it.

Let's just hope the weather cools down a bit before next weekend!!

Amen on the heat thing!  My body does NOT like exercise when it's 90 and humid.  Unless we get to change it to a swim, a swim, and a swim - skip the bike and run thing... though it doesn't sound like a few of you here would appreciate that too much

Looks like I'll be sporting a pink cap.... ooh, girly.  #2680 is ready!!

The bike course was very flat and other than the sheer number of people on the road should be a fast track. I didn't keep track of my exact time but I went with 2 others and my one friend and I never really dropped below 20 mph other than a few turns and when we doubled back to make sure my other friend on his new bike was ok. Even with all that my "slow" friend averaged 16.5 mph. As long as the wind is down I'm looking for a PR avg for me on the bike.

The run course I could see getting pretty crowded in a hurry. The good news is I"m in the very 1st wave so won't have as much to deal with as the later waves.

didn't do the adjustment, so I think I can pull a 1:10 with the shorter bike ride. I'd love to be top 5 in my AG, especially before I turn 40 and it gets really tough

Larry/Michele: Any chance that we could get a preliminary indication of water temp..say Thursday? I am sure that its going to be at least in the 80s..but it would be good to know if wetsuits are going to be allowed at all.

Its not critical for me..I am going sans wetsuit no matter what, but others may be on the fence if its in the 78-84 zone.

In case anyone missed this in the other thread on NJST:

86 degrees at 11 am today (7-21)...we'll take the temp at 6am on Sunday so I'd say under 84 is about 50/50...under 78 is about 99.99/.01.

Well..a follow-up to our goals.

Outside of the obvious tragedy dampening spirits, this was a great race for me. I didnt hit my sub-65 goal (68 and change). I knew that 65 was an ideal for me...but I was happy that I hit my other goal of top-100 (2nd page, as I call it)...and I came in 82nd. I love this race..and I plan on hitting the spring one more time next year (hoping for 1st page) and then onto the oly.

Best race in the region.

following is my report that i posted in forum on http://jstriclub.org:

 2489I Robert Witanek 48 M BELLE M NJ 614 38:58 43:18 2:59 148 1:04:20 21.6 2:21 440 58:53 9:30 2:47:28 35 M45-49 289 M

Was looking for a 2:40 - see my transitions were a bit long and my run was SLOW (!). I can do close to 7 minute miles when not part of a brick or triathlon. I also did not anticipate any toll the swim could have taken on my run.

I need to figure out how to maintain the strength for the run. Swim was slow as well though I know that about my current swim situation. Glad I got through that though as it was my longest triathlon swim to date.

I very happy with the bike though. Maybe I worked too hard on that not leaving enough gas in the tank for the run. There were 3 women who - with me - were passing a lot of racers and we kept passing each other. I was joking with one of them a little saying that my 1 goal is to beat at least one of them. (Since they were in later waves than me they had already beat me.) Vying with them helped keep me tearing through the other bikers. I think in the end they all dismounted ahead of me though I am not sure.

My first OLY which - a completion is welcome and even if I had hit 3 hours I would have been good with it.

Very proud Dad! He will only get stronger! Embarassed that his swim pace was faster than mine apparently!

Great August Newsletter by CGI.

For those of you that didnt see it...Larry and Michele "finished" the race with the family in honor of Mr. Hobgood. How many RDs would do that? Speaks volumes about the character of Larry and Michele. Kudos to them.

And next year's race will be in honor of him? What better way to honor a Triathlete than continuing on with him in mind. awesome stuff. Oct 1...reg opens, and I will be signed up that day!!

Yep, I saw the newsletter too and was surprised and moved to see the RD's and the family went out and finshed the Tri together.  Amazing story.  It's nice the NJST will go forward remembering John; it is a fitting tribute.

I deleted the email now, but I am pretty sure that they said Oct 1, and the Black Bear website states Oct 1 as well (all CGI races open the same day). If you find out different, please post!
