Pre-race routine:

The usual. Woke up at 5:00. Ate a hammer bar and drank water. Was at the site around 6:15. Set up the transition and such. Then got body marked and my chip. Hit the bathroom, then relaxed as much as I could.
Event warmup:

Went for a little swim about 10 minutes before the gun. I was going off in the third wave, so maybe more like 15 minutes.
Swim
  • 13m 42s
  • 766 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

My fastest swim thus far in a sprint. I went out faster than usual in hopes that it might lead to less congestion. It did! I usually breathe bi-laterally, but my body wanted more oxygen than that for once. So I was breathing every stroke to the right. Unfortunately I'm not used to this (always bi-lateral in training sessions) and it made me slide to the right as I swam. Every now and then I'd look up and be like "CRAP! Where is everyone?!?" Never too far off track though. Very happy with the swim
What would you do differently?:

Better sighting. Also need to practice breathing on just my right side in practice occasionally.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Transition was in a different spot than last year. This year it included about a 200 meter run from the lake to transition, so the times went up a bit. My friend Eddie was working the event, and decided it would be funny to put sunflower seeds on my aerobars. Of course, at the time I had no idea and was just thinking WTF? Got my biking shoes on quickly, helmet snapped on, and was gone.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 47m 7s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 19.78 mile/hr
Comments:

I mounted the bike and heard Eddie say, "Theres sunflower seeds in your shoes too!" Turns out there wasn't. I had a laugh and got to business. Biking is my weakest leg, and I know it. Got passed by a lot of people as usual. Saw an age grouper fly by at around mile 8. I was just hoping to see him on the run. I was able to play a cat and mouse game with this guy on a sweet Felt. With about 5 miles to go I put the hammer down and never saw him again. I rode in 13th gear (14 speed bike) the entire ride.

I still want a better bike to see how much of a difference it makes. The good news is that I'm clearly getting faster without one. My fastest ride in sprint so far as well. Over four minutes faster than last year!
What would you do differently?:

Upgrade the bike. In time, steveseer, in time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Had trouble racking the bike. Luckily I was at the very end of my rack and ended up just leaning it on the supports. When I got it post race, somebody have racked it properly for me. (Triathletes are awesome!) Helmet off, and threw on my racing shoes. Fast transition.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to rack a bike?
Run
  • 21m 51s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt the best I ever had coming off the bike. Got right into it. Before the first mile had ended, I had already passed the guy in my age group. I was flying by people the whole run.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster. But I'm happy with the performance.
Post race
Warm down:

Moes sponsored the race. So, I ate a taco. Duh.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need more training. And a better bike.

Event comments:

By far the best sprint I've ever done. Also the first time I've gotten an age group award, and I won!! How'd that happen?

A grrrrrrrrrreat race for you! Super speedy on the swim, esp. with a bit of wandering. Nice job on the bike, too. It really is the engine that matters (Unless you are still on cruiser bars into the wind? ) Sweet run with feeling good at the start to top it off!
