Pre-race routine:

Up at butt crack of dawn, morning routine, drink some water, eat a nanner and poptarts on the go.
Event warmup:

Stand in line at the lake front in the freezing cold whipping wind for the port-a-johns. Line was forever. They definately needed more toiteys.
Run

Comments:

Out of breath as soon as I took off. Got it under control at the top of the first hill. Tried not to let people pass me. Gave it my all since I didn't know what to do anyway. Felt great going into transition. Dave was there cheering everyone one and yelled that Clint was about a minute ahead. That made me feel good:)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Transition 1

Comments:

My legs were a bit wobbley from the run. Took a little too long to strap the shoes on and make sure the helmet was buckled. Dropped my bike while locking the helmet. Great bike rack for bike out. Good thing we signed up some time back in January.
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting into my shoes quicker.

Comments:

I am soooo surprised by my bike time what with the wind and all. A personal best for me. YIPEE. Wind was sooooo strong on Golf Rd. that I was forced to go into the aero bars. Pleasantly surprised that I was comfortable in them. Didn't break as much on the downhills as I have done in the past. Getting a little more comfortable with the speed. Took sgoehners advice from a while ago and yelled, WHHEEEEE down one of them. The volunteers just looked at me as I was whizzing by. Very funny.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on the cadence.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Yes, I will say it. Glad I got the Yankz. It was so nice to just pull the shoes on, grab my visor and run out of transition. This year my feet weren't numb either. Score!!
What would you do differently?:

Again, work a little faster.
Run

Comments:

Belly was sloshing around so I guess I drank a little too much on the bike. On the bright side I didn't have to stop for water on the run at all. Kept a good attitude and tried to chase down those that passed me on the bike. Felt good to pass some people from the few waves ahead of me. My pace was actually faster here than the first run leg. Huh, even after biking into those 165 mph winds! Amazing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I really gave it all I had.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some gag me with at spoon Heed and some water. Went to the Fleet Feet tent to talk to DJDavey and wait for Clint to come find me. Had a great morning of racing. It was fun to see the handful of Donkeys that showed up, djdavey, sgoehner, firstnet, amyjo, jwebs, bunnyt, scoobysdad. I also saw a couple of my friends when coming thru the finish shoot that I wasn't expecting to see at all. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to hook up with them after the race. Clint and I went to the food line right away so we wouldn't have to wait forever. Nice spread of pancakes, fruit, pbj's bagels, trail mix. Lots of volunteers on this race and water stations. Made sure I thanked as many as possible. Went to get our bikes and saw Amy and Craig on the way out. Stopped to share some fellowship and a bloody mary. Can you say SPICEY. Thanks to them.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The wind. Could I be any faster on the bike without the wind? Did the wind help me when it was at my back? I don't know. All I know is that I beat my bike time from last year by 5 minutes. Pretty happy with that.

Event comments:

Pros: lots of volunteers and water stations
Cons: no mile markers (may have been blown away) on the run and not enough portapotties.
