Carrollton, Georgia
United States

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 32m 37s
Overall Rank = 161/234
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 16/26
Pre-race routine:

Wake up, take The Meeps for a walk, make a PBJ and start loading up the car.Left my race belt in the masses of folded laundry in the living room. Oh well.

ALMOST left the house without my goggles, that would have been bad...

Drank an FRS drink on the drive down, just because.
Event warmup:

Nuffin' really. Set up my transition area, went to registration/check-in and got marked up. Ran into my friend Marc, pretty sure we were the only 2 from Douglasville in the race.

Looked around for my parents, but they didn't arrive until near the start.
Swim
  • 08m 15s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the 3rd wave off the shore. Remembering last race, I made sure to get into a solid breathing rhythm from the start, and I did. Didn't bump into too many people, pulled strong, just remembered my technique and made sure to relax, be smooth, and not get anxious or any of that nonsense.
What would you do differently?:

Not much really. It was a good swim. Had I gone much harder, I may have risked blowing my top before the finish, I think I timed the swim pretty well.

Wear a stopwatch to accurately track my times.
Transition 1
  • 03m 30s
Comments:

Run up from the shore to transition. Dried off my feet, put on my shirt (it got stuck for a couple seconds), helmet, shoes, and off we go. Time is an estimate since we weren't using chips for this race.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Deciding to race without socks is a good decision, saves me noticable time. Getting a dedicated tri top that I can swim in will knock this time down even more.
Bike
  • 43m 30s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.55 mile/hr
Comments:

I was kinda hurting for miles 2-4 while my legs got warm and we got out of the uphill section. Hit 36mph on one downhill.

Once we got more into the flatter part of the course, I was able to really put the hammer down. Mid-20s for most of the second half of the course, topped 30mph a couple times on mild declines on the highway. Played leapfrog with one guy for the last 1/3 of the bike.

Definitely a strong second half.
What would you do differently?:

Get faster? Maybe warm-up on the bike pre-race if anything. Starting out with the hilly portion wasn't the most fun, but I definitely made up for it.
Transition 2
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Again, time is an estimate. rack the bike, helmet off, plop down and put on the worm burners. Got my last swig of water and off we go.

I get the feeling that I might have had a little too much water during the bike, 'cause I kinda have to pee. Oh well, no time for that. Off we go.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Shoes off, shoes on. Not much more to it. Good T2 for my 2nd tri ever.
Run
  • 34m 50s
  • 3.4 miles
  • 10m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Hilly course. Started out my run from transition MUCH better than last time. Started kinda slow to get my legs under me, but I was running and not walking.

I wish I could say I ran the whole course, but I didn't. I probably walked a total of 1/4 mile over the full course when I needed to catch my breath. When I was moving, I was moving well.

I got passed by some people, but I actually passed a few people on the run. Amazing.

With under a mile to go, I kinda got a second wind and stepped up the pace a little, and I think it showed in my time. Once we got within sight of the last turn, my friend Marc (he got 3rd overall, I hate him) was there yelling at me to PUSH PUSH PUSH!!! So I did.

HEAVY kick the last 100 yds up the hill to the finish. Felt so good to finish strong instead of struggling the whole run like last time.

After the finish and talking to other people, I heard plenty of comments about the difficulty of the course, so I dont feel so bad.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU and keep getting faster. This run was SO MUCH BETTER than my last tri it's amazing (12:30+ pace...). Having someone waiting at the finish to bust your balls and sprint the last 100 is always a help.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, bananas, talking with mom & dad, cheering on other finishers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HTFU-ness, running is still improving, time in the saddle. What else is there?

Event comments:

Post-race activities were hampered by the rainstorm rapidly approaching. Food and such were plentiful, we just ran out of time. Bananas, apples, power bars, eater, gatorade and such.

The only thing I wish I had was really accurate times, but a stopwatch will solve that.

Good race in a familiar location, I'll be back next year for sure.

I'll put up a race pic when they get uploaded.
