Subject: RE: Looking for a good On-Line Store for Road Bike Components Define "good".
If price is all you're concerned with, you can get a reasonable estimate for who has the least expensive of that component from :
www.comparisonpricing.com
If you're looking for Dura-Ace or most Ultegra, Nashbar isn't likely to have those; Performance might. They'll likely have 105 and lower (I'm generalizing here; don't flame! ).
I really like www.excelsports.com They have most everything, but then again, they're higher-end components and not 105 or lower. Their customer service is really good. I once switched 1/2 an order b/c I decided I wanted the black and not the silver. They had no problem with that. They insisited on double checking spoke lengths when I ordered spokes to build a set of wheels. They almost never have back-orders which you're not aware of.
If you're looking for the "one off" odd-ball piece, eBay has a seller "bikemaui" who is great to deal with. He's got some stuff you won't find elsewhere. He went out of his way to fix my mistake on an FSA crankset.
www.cambriabike.com has stuck me high and dry for backorders, but they have a lot. www.pricepoint.com has good closeouts. www.biketiresdirect.com has tires and more.
Another trick: Buy from a vendor in your local UPS shipping zone. You get everything next day while paying for ground. Items go through your home DC, hence they go vendor-DC-you in 1 day. For me, that's www.bikeman.com who also have excellent customer service.
Another point to consider: You might save $5 buying on-line; but do you have the technical skills and tools to install what you buy? You might be better off buying from your LBS in the long run if you're not tech savvy enough to trim out that derailleur you just saved a few $$$ through mail order.
