The last two long rides I've done, 3.5 and 4 hrs, I've lost about 4 # each time. Is this normal? It's been pretty hot, in the 90's, but I'm concerned that this is too much in such a short time. What will happen over a 13-15 hr race?

I'm no expert, but I'd hazzard a guess that the #4 you lost is all water. Looks like you'll need to hone your hydration plan for your IM or you'll be in big trouble.

I would lose up to 7# a day during football two-a-days in high school. Of course, that was in the dark ages of limiting hydration during training.

These days I really have to watch my hydration and electrolyte levels. You mention how much you lost, but how much did you take in during the rides? How did you feel during and after, any cramping or headache?

I took in 2 bottles of water and 1 botle of cytomax. I also had 2 gels. I felt fine after just a little tired. No cramping.

lol.. I remember those days...

----- To the OP --- Yes, just make sure your getting it back after the ride. When I get off of the bike, I look like I just got done swimming.

As a point of reference, I went on a ~3 hour ride yesterday from about 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. I think the high temp here yesterday was 96 or 97, so while it wasn't quite that hot while I was riding, it was getting toasty.

My hydration/electrolytes consisted of:

1 salt stick tab before starting

1 aero bottle of Gatorade & another 24oz bottle on the down tube

refill #1 was 32oz of Gatorade & 20oz of water + a salt stick

refill #2 was 32oz of Powerade & 20oz of water + Hammer Gel

When I got home I filled another 24oz of Gatorade, went to the neighbors pool with the kids, had 2 beers and finally had to pee after I got home which was like 2 hours later.

For me, the sign that I've topped the tank back off is when I'm finally processing fluids out of the system again. I've also learned the hard way that in my case, electrolytes are as important as the fluid intake. One without the other leaves me wasted after a long workout.

2 bottles in 3.5 or 4 hour ride..that is why you lost weight.

Figure your sweat rate and work on replacing what you sweat.

I'm a women and women typically sweat less than men but my bike sweat rate is 46 oz and run is 55 oz/hour...I try to drink 2 bottles an hour.

Longer you train and race more important it is to keep dehydration to a minimum as it will effect you later in the day if you are down.
