Sunny
Total Time = 7h 10m
Overall Rank = 1236/1290
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 63/68
Pre-race routine:

I stretched, set up transition area, checked out my bike, checked out the water. Walked from where my bike was racked to run start and back, to swim finish and back, and from dismount area and back...helped alot. Went to say hi to Yoli at the CWW tent.
Event warmup:

Warmup jog, more stretching, swimming.
Swim
  • 43m 36s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Near the end I had 3 swimmers and a couple of kayakers ask me if I was okay. Guess I must have looked sick. It was great to see Beka66 cheering for me as I got out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Basically I need to see a psychiatrist to get over my open water anxiety issues. But I didn't end up hanging off a boat to use my inhaler and get myself together this time. I just went VEEEEERRRRRYYYYY slowly when I felt myself getting anxious. (I am amazed that I wasn't DFL!)
Transition 1
  • 03m 48s
Comments:

Suit got stuck on timing chip and it came off so I had to fish for it in the leg of my wetsuit. Couldn't find half my stuff as the dude next to me took up the entire space that was supposed to be for both of us--I nicely moved his stuff over and left it in the same order, with a volunteer who asked me to do this so that another lady could fit her bike in on the other side of mine. Evidently he had a little fit over that and threw my towel over my bike and my stuff was everywhere. (Just guessing that's how it happened as he had his stuff neatly taking up the entire space again at T1)
What would you do differently?:

Find the guy I mentioned above and kick his selfish ass? Someday, after I learn to swim in open water, I will learn to run with and jump on my bike.
Bike
  • 1h 37m 46s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 16.02 mile/hr
Comments:

Glad that big dead snake issue at the bottom of Left Hand Canyon was taken care of.
What would you do differently?:

Checked my new drive train out better before leaving the LBS. Shifting problem is not all operator error after all.
Transition 2
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

I'm a newbie, can't do the thing with the feet on top of shoes and jump off a moving bike yet :) Extra time spent to get ankle brace on and cold packs into my bike gloves (which I ran with) as my knuckles, ankle and right foot were flaring up.
What would you do differently?:

Thought about spitting on my selfish neighbor's stuff, but, I did not.
Run
  • 1h 25m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

This just sucked for me. My feet were sore from an SLE flare and the knuckles on my hands were getting really sore and swollen.
What would you do differently?:

I could have pushed myself harder, but my foot felt seriously injured and I really wanted to finish feeling good (okay, that didn't really happen so well either), not hating the whole day, so I walked/jogged as it felt good.
Post race
Warm down:

Visiting with the family (hubby, kids, mom), shower, stretch, massage, eat, medical tent visit (too much going on for one kidney today).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. Me and my issues
2. Selfish neighbor

Event comments:

I had a lot of fun even though this wasn't under the best conditions health-wise for me. I did end up in the medical tent after the massage--I just had severe nausea and a headache. It might have been too much too soon after my nephrectomy.

1500 meters. Some seaweed, films of flesh eating bacteria, random shadows that were surely hungry fish with big sharp teeth and people splashing all around me to thoroughly freak me out in the open water as usual :) A couple of people did come in contact with me. At least there weren't the big waves splashing up my nose this time.

Andria,

GREAT job today, especially on that swim. You'll be slinking through that water like a fish soon enough.

Tough break on the bike, I've been there too.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

You're miles ahead of me (literally haha) this year. Keep up the great work!

Congratulations! You did great on the swim, and it will get better over time. The bike went great, especially considering you stopped for a friend on Old Stage. I'm glad you pushed through everything you were experiencing and had a great race!

Selfish neighbors suck, but I think you did exactly what you should have, which is to stay polite but defend your own right to equal space. Luckily most triathletes are *not* jerks.

Good race...You didn't get the DND and didn't need to use your inhaler in the water. That's all progress!

With respect to your neighbour, and he shouldn't have much respect...They have numbers for a reason, you could have used his number to report him to the race marshals for "interfering with a racer's equipment". I believe there is a USAT rule about that.

How was hubby? After this?

Your progress continues to amaze me!

Thanks.  Hubby offered to help me pay for a swim coach.  Or a psychiatrist.  Whichever would help me most in the water

My goal is just to do it faster/better next year.  Without getting sick would also be a bonus.  Then again, the guy in the medical tent was really cute
