writers2 - 2008-09-16 3:38 PM I believe you can do it with an every other weekend opportunity. That said, your kids are only young once. I m ay be in the minority here, but having met moms and dads who train for IM races and are virtually never home on weekends, I'm not sure who loses out more. You or your kids. For many, I say wait until they get a little older (or are teens and you can't wait to get away )

Yeah, but the difference with me is that I will only see them every other weekend, and the weekends I have them, very little training, if any, will go on.  Am looking at a 12 days on/2 off sort of thing.

If you have the time and dedication the other 12 days of the two week rotation I think you can do it. But it you are going to pile on a "mega week" and then be so tired that you don't want to do a thing with the kids I would not do it. I think consulting a coach is the way to go and let them devise a plan and see if it is doable.

Just make sure they are careful with all the broken glass around the trainer.

Well played.

Good point about being overly tired when the kids are here, I hadn't considered that.

Pretty much well said here that creativity is the key. I am in a similar situation, single Dad. I have my kids, who are 6,8, and 10, 100% for the Summer and then Holiday's. Over the Summer there is a lot of creativity going on. But the thing that was only mentioned once or twice, is that the critical build is only a couple months before your taper, so the long training sessions are pretty much only in those weeks and vacation day's or if your job will let you 1/2 day's can really help get the mileage in during the week.

Where there is a will there is ALWAYS a way!

Best of luck!
