When I do a leg raise on my back, or a hnging leg raise with the legs extended, there is a popping noise that comes from where the head of the femur meets my hip socket. Anyone have a clue what this is? Had something similar? Is it like when my car made that clicking noise whenever I turned left?

I do the same thing. i seem to be the only one in my gym who makes this really loud "popping" sound when doing leg lifts. I thought I was the only one doing this at all. gld to hear I'm not the only freak!

Does it feel like it is coming from the outside of your leg? Do you have any soreness when you run or bike in the same spot? If so it sounds like "Snapping Hip Syndrome" And no I didn't make that up. It is either a little bursitis or tendonitis when your IT band rubs over your femur. It is common in both runners and cyclists. It is not real serious unless it gets painful. Flexibility in your IT band is the main treatment.

Let me know if this helps :-)

Thanks! I searched on that and found some stretches for the IT band. Actually it feels like it's on the inside or front, so I'm thinking Iliopsoas. Thanks for the name of the condition, that brought up some good web pages. It doesn't appear to be a problem, but it is annoying.

Here are some pages I found:

Thanks for the info. I have weird popping noises in my hip too, mostly if I am on my back and lower my legs when they're extended. I have major problems with my IT band, so the two are probably connected. Now, when my fellow gym members stare over at me as the "POP" echos across the room, I can say with authority, "Hey, I have Snapping Hip Syndrome!"
