Is it possible to train for a Sprint Tri only one day per week in each discipline?

With my schedule, twice a week is impossible.

Any workout suggestions????

Three workouts a week, one for each sport?  Even if you were already in great shape, that wouldn't be enough to maintain fitness.  Go for it if and see how it works, but I think with 6 days off on each sport a week, you'll still be losing more fitness than you gain.

There's no way you can fit in a 25-30 minute run a few times a week?  Wake up early or during your lunch?

Oh, I can fit it in, but don't have the energy. 3 kids and a 65 hour per week job(in the Florida heat) really drains me. I can train for a few weeks, but then I get sick and have to take a week off. Then start all over.

Sorry to hear that.  Training should be fun, not stressful, so I can understand cutting it out if you've got enough other stressors in your life.

Good luck!

You can probably train to finish a sprint on three workouts per week; in part it will depend on what you do during those sessions but it should be sufficient to get you across the line.

One thing that you may find, is that when you start to train regulary (with your three sessions per week) you may find that in a couple of weeks you have more energy to exercise and are able to add in a fourth workout (and so on).

Also, how quickly are you ramping up your training when you get sick?  If this is a trend it may be that you are trying to do too much too soon.

Good luck,

Shane

Here's a thought:

Focus on one sport.  Pick one you enjoy, and train for that.

With that kind of work week, knowing what three kids is like, and the fact you live in south Florida...spend three days a week swimming, running, or cycling...doesn't matter which one, then go diving one day during the weekend.  On the boat by 8, home by 1.  You won't be triathlon ready, but you'll be more healthy, and you already live in one of the best diving environments in the country.

I agree with Scout7.  Pick one sport and do as much as you can.  I am also in the same boat as you.  I am only run training right now.  I very occasionally get in a bike and less often a swim (this past week has been an exception).  I believe if you do enough running, your cardiovascular system will be sufficiently "fit" to get you through a sprint tri.  The same could be said for riding but it tends to take up a lot more time.  I raced a sprint the weekend before last with probably only 2 road rides and 1 swim since last August, but perhaps 5 days a week of running.  My time was understandably 11 minutes slower than the last time I raced that race but I lost most of that time on the run.  My bike splits were almost identical.  And the bike splits were not slow.  My very first sprint was done with absolutely no bike training but I was running at my peak then.  I borrowed a bike for that race.   So, yes you can do a sprint on limited training but I would concentrate on one sport and I would consider trying to do up to 5 sessions a week rather than 3.
