Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am, ate a granola bar, drank a Gatorade and went down to the lobby to catch the shuttle to the transition area. Forgot coffee! Got to the transisition area about 5:15 and set up, I was not in a hurry and did not realize that when it said they closed T1 at 5:45, that meant you had to be out! The guy came by and announced that it was closing in 5 minutes, and if you were not out you were DQ'd. I got out:)
Event warmup:

My swim wave was not till 7:54, second to last so I had lot's of time to kill. Sat around and talked to my wife, who had volunteered to do chip handout.
Swim
  • 26m 54s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

They advertise this as the fastest swim in triathlon! Maybe if you are in the beginning waves, but to me that was a long-assed tough swim. I don't think the current helped much, I was watching the boats that were moored and they had almost started to turn the other way, so I thnk we had almost slack tide. The good part was that all the other waves must have beat the jellyfish to death, because I never hit one. I thought I was having a pretty good swim, towards the end I had caught a lot of the swimmers from the earlier two waves, I got kicked a couple of times by swimmers breaststroking, but I manages to have a clean swim for the most part. I never saw the guy who had the heart attack, he was gone by the time I got there.
What would you do differently?:

Get younger so that I could get an earlier swim wave:)
Transition 1
  • 05m 55s
Comments:

It was a long run back to the transition area, I started a slow jog and then started to feel my calf so I walked the rest of the way in. I'll bet it was 1/4 mile to T1
What would you do differently?:

Run in
Bike
  • 1h 18m 53s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.90 mile/hr
Comments:

This was the hilliest bike course that I have ridden. I knew there were hills going into it, but by the time we turned around in the Bronx I was looking to see if my brake was rubbing, flat tire, etc. That being said, I loved the course, cool to ride on the highway and through a toll booth. The Hudson on one side, the city on the other.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, my plan was to take it easy and not put too much strain on the calf, looking at my time and seeing how I missed about 5 weeks of riding I was very happy with the bike. Came of feeling good.
Transition 2
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

Walked the transition, again trying to save the calf.
Run
  • 1h 11m 7s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

I had prepared myself to walk the whole way, which I was not looking forward to. I walked all the hills, shuffled along the flats and just kept my pace to where it did not hurt too much. I could feel it when I tried to pick up the pace.
What would you do differently?:

Run the whole way.
Post race
Warm down:

Got through the finish, they were handing out nice cold wet towels which felt great.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being able to run.

Event comments:

I would recommend this race to anyone. It was very well organized, great volunteers, cool course. We went up with 12 people from out tri club so it was a great weekend overall. I think part of it for me was that I did not think I could do it because of the calf injury, so just being out there for me was great.

Congratulations on a great race!  I think you did an awesome job, especially considering you had a hurt calf!  Your bike leg may have felt slow to you, but that pace was impressive to me!!  Great job

Great job on the NYC race. Glad no jellyfish stung you and that the bike went well. Toll booth??? I want to do this race! Sorry the calf is still bugging you.
