Anyone planning on doing the Covington Century on 8/2?  See http://www.covingtoncentury.org/.  I've never done it before, but here its a great one.  I'll be there with friends!  It's on the family calendar this time so no conflict with hubby's tennis, I promise .

I'll be there. It's my last 100 mile ride before IM so I don't plan on stopping at the SAG stops much and plan to finalize my nutrition plan for race day. I'd love to meet you before or after the ride.

Chis Zimmer, Amy Potter, and Felix Miller are doing 100.  I am thinking about doing it.  If so, I will do 100 also.  Last year the hills were not that bad, but the heat was awful.  It got up to 98 degrees which really knocked the wind out of me.

Lisa Bennett (LisaB) said she would probably do it if someone was doing the 80 mile option.

Abbagei, what distance are you guys planning on doing?

I can't believe I'm saying this while I sit here in pain from my 80 miler today, but since I'll be in town afterall, I may do this one as well.  If I'm healed by then of course.

I think I'm only going to do 50.  You all are so far more advanced than I am.  My longest ride to date is 42 miles (Roswell Mayor Ride) and it almost killed me!  I've never felt pain like that before.....Anyway, I'm committed to 50.  If you all want to rendez-vous (yes, I just mixed Southern slang with a French reference...I'm complex!), I'd love to put faces with posts Smile  Any suggestions?

Glad to read I picked a decent ride, I have a lot of fun at these things.

I will probably do the 50 mile route or if I feel up for it the 80 mile route.  I practically crawled in on the 66 mile route at the West Georgia Century.  If I decide to do the 80 I'm just hoping it's not too hilly!  Apparently last year it was pretty hot, so I will have my aero water bottle up front, two bottles on the back, and one on my frame to be prepared for that.

Can anyone give me a heads up on the course profile?

I tried to find route information on their website (www.CovingtonCentury.org), but they didn't have anything.  I did find a route on mapmyride ( http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ga/covington/193965852) but there is no telling if this is the ACTUAL ride route.  This is supposed to be VERY flat and fast, but the elevation for this route likes a little rolling hills to me!

Lisa B - 2008-07-28 8:56 AM Anyone know how where the 80 splits from the 100?

Heather and I rode the 80 last year and others did the 100. If I remember correctly, they split fairly close to the end...maybe around mile 65-70 or so. Also, I don't recall this being extremely flat OR fast. I'm not saying it's really hilly but it has more hills than the SCT...more like the Bud Plant ride. Rolling with maybe a few larger hills you'll want to just spin up. I do think that it is a 'easier' ride than Blazing Saddles- I haven't done Blazing Saddles, but I'm basing it on talking to people that have done both. Also, stay hydrated! It was a REALLY hot day last year!

And on a side note, the aid stations were really cool. Since this supports an organization for kids, many of the stops were staffed my the kids. They were all really sweet!
Have fun!

Edited to add(my comments from this ride last year)  Hope this helps!:
Fun ride today!  Despite the fact that it was a LONG way to drive, it was a nice course.  Lots of rolling hills with a few harder hills thrown in...but nothing too bad.  I think that I could have done the 100 without much trouble, but I was ready to be done.  Neck was sore and it was getting HOT!  I got an impressive jersey tan today...so that's something to be excited about.

Doesn't look like the change in elevation is all that much throughout.  After blazing saddles this past Saturday, this is going to be pancake flat.   I think I may do the full hundy.

According to the ride director the route has not been finalized but that it will be very similar to the past two years.

I'm committed to finishing 50, but will go for 80 if the body will let me and conditions aren't too hot.  Hubby's on the hook for kid watching for the whole day, so I'm in no hurry!

Lisa B - 2008-07-28 8:56 AM Anyone know how where the 80 splits from the 100?

I just spoke to the race director - the 80 and 100 mile route split about 3 miles after the third rest stop which is about 40 miles into the ride.  They then pick back up the same route about 25 miles from the end, which is about 54 for the 80 mile route and 74 for the 100.

Also, online registration closes on 7/30 but there is race day registration.

I wish I could ride with the big boys!  I'll be one of the pokey one's in the back.

Let's put it this way, I don't think there will be any spaghetti left when I finish!

Just got this:

A couple of notes from Covington from last year.

1.       It was 105 degrees last year – make sure you drink twice what you think you need (rest stops are well stocked)

2.       The mass rollout is a nightmare – roads are narrow and a lot of unskilled riders will be there

3.       The front group will roll to the 40-mile mark at 22+, but it will be very spread out by then too

4.       The final split point to decide between 100 and 85 (next shorter option) is not long after the 40-mile rest stop, so be wise in your choice (last year I felt great at that point and went for the 100, but the last 10 miles or so were not a lot of fun for me!)

5.       There were some real bad spots on the long route where you had to ride over broken up pavement and gravel/dirt for about a mile (probably less), which was no fun at all (that may be fixed or routed around this year)

6.       The ride *IS NOT FLAT*, so you will hit some hills (nothing like Cochise or the gaps, but not flat either)

7.       Don’t skip rest stops (or at least not any after the first one) – you need the water and a snack, unless you load all your pockets like some do (MB))

8.       Don’t stop long – I made that mistake last year thinking sitting still in the hot sun was better than rolling on, even slowly (it’s not)

9.       The 100 mile option last year was actually 103-105 (which when you’re parched, hot and cramping, those extra few miles really matter)

10.   The food at the end is edible, but you might want to skip it if you’ve fueled well along the way and get to a real restaurant for real food afterwards

11.   I don’t recall a lot of bathroom opportunities along the route (I used a tree or two), so plan ahead (especially the ladies)

12.   It is a pretty boring ride, so find a buddy (I think I sucked English Rob’s wheel from about 90 on, thanks again Rob, I needed it!)

I have not registered, but may show up and register on site.  I sort of have a personal goal to “beat this ride” (I felt like it beat me last year).

The best way to get started is to roll out at 7:45 (15 minutes early), or 8:15 (15 minutes late).  I started late-ish last year and fought to catch up to the DCC group, only to get separated again later.  Catching up through the crowd is not fun (or safe).  However, on the route last year we went up a long straight road only to u-turn and come right back down.  You can “cheat” there (if the route is the same) to rejoin your “team”.  I noticed someone do that last year.  Don’t know who.  Oh yeah, it was me (but I was within site of the cop marking the turnaround point).

If you want to park on site, be there before 7:00 AM or else you’re going to park a ways away and have to ride in, which is a pain if you want to go back and dump off swag at the car (t-shirts, etc).

Thanks for the AWESOME advice.  I'll need it.  It's suppose to be hot http://www.weather.com/outlook/health/allergies/wxdetail/30041?dayNum=3.  I'm hoping some random showers will hit Friday to cool us down unexpectedly...one can always dream
