But quite a departure from the highly enjoyable and educational bikini waxing and leg shaving.

I was wondering if anyone out there celebrates Lent (the 40 days before Easter) and if so, what they do for it?? Are you giving up anything for Lent?? Also, another thing that some people do is they add something, as well--often an counter-thing for the item they are giving up, i.e., I'm going to give up my special coffee drink from the local so and so everyday and instead I will give all that money to the local youth at risk program... or something like that..

Anyways, just wondering...

Dana L.

No, I do not give up anything for lent. I already do not eat a lot of junk food items anyways. I do observe one jewish tradition in honour of my wife's parents by abstaining from all food and drink one day until sundown...I cannot remember the name of this observance, but I do it every year. IEven though I am not of that faith, it is the least I can do for the person who means the world to me.

I always promise myself that I will read a chapter of the Bible every night.  Sometimes, I actually do it.  I have given up wine for Lent, too, but that is tough unless my wife does it too.

that would be Yom Kippur.....Day of Atonment. My parents are Jewish and I was raised with Judiasm. That being said, I have not set foot in a synagogue (or any other house of worship) in a long long time. No, I take that back, I went to a funeral a few weeks ago

Anyhow, it is Yom Kippur when fastingis encouraged to atone for any sins of the past year.

Last year I gave up beer - that was hard but it did help me drop 40 pounds and start working out. Not sure what I'll do this year maybe I'll give up my diet coke addition.

Instead of giving something up for Lent, I try to do something positive daily. Kind of like the "random act of kindness" movement. I thought about giving up chocolate, but I'm not sure that I could do it! Actually maybe I could. I just remembered that Sundays technically don't count in Lent, (if you count up the days in Lent and EXCLUDE Sundays, then there are 40 days) and you can "indulge" in whatever you gave up on Sundays. Maybe I will give up chocolate!

Last year I gave up fast food and did the traditional fish on Friday.  One of the nice things about the fast food is that I hardly eat it anymore.  It definately isn't a first or second option to me.  This year..........well with training, IT band problems, sick kids and it still being February, I had know idea we were even close to Ash Wednesday.  I will have to think about it pretty quickly.  To me Easter is spring time, I am definately not feeling spring around here.  I can't believe it is March next week.

After another relatively mind-numbing session on the bike trainer last night, I'm about ready to give that up as well.

:-)

I know, I know, it's good for me, but all I have to entertain me is a bitty television with no cable, no vcr--just little bunny ears on top. The only stations available to me were Dr. Phil and American Idol (neither of which delight me, I'm afraid)

I'm going to give up alcohol. It will help me lose weight and plus I really don't need it. That's my Lent wish. Ovetta.

No, but here's my lent story: in ?1992? I was at mardis gras and went to ash wednesday mass for kicks. A nun doing the thing with the ash looked me in the eye and told me I was going to hell. I don't know if she was having a bad day or was just prophetic, but I got such a kick out of that. I didn't hear her say anything to anyone else.

Oh well.

Lent is just around the corner... and I've been giving it some thought.  I haven't really observed Lent in a long time, but I'm thinking it might be a good thing for me this year.

What about the rest of you?

I don't typically do anything for Lent, although I'm thinking about using that to help me break some of the bad food I've been eating.  Maybe no candy during Lent?  I think I could do it, but it would certainly be a challenge for me.

When I was in the military, and still believed in christianity, I use to give up meat every lent since I wasn't going to church, just so I could feel like I was doing something.  Now that I am no longer christian, I really don't do anything.

Funny story is I went out drinking with some buddies during lent and everyone was getting fried rice for this one place that had the "best" fried rice.  Well I was pretty smashed, but I was still trying to pick, with chopsticks, all the meat out of my fried rice.  Guess you needed to be there...but it was pretty funny for my friends to watch me trying to pick the tiny peices of meat out of the fried rice with chopsticks while drunk.
