11 weeks left!!! *bump, bump, bump* (that was the sound of me hitting my head on the keyboard). I'm not ready!

This week was a recovery week for me. The recovery weeks are harder for me to do. I find that if I have a big workout planned, it is easier to get motivated for. If I have an easy day I find it easy to skip the workout or really take it easy. Really bad habit for me

So, I started the week off with a swim. I was still sore from the weekends long workout so I just played in the water for a while. Tuesday I had a short run followed by the "massage from H*!!" I think the Massage Therapist had her knee on my neck at some point, but I'm not sure. I was sore for the rest of the day but actually felt better on Wednesday. The rest of the week was uneventful.
Swim:
I swam 2 times for 2 hours and about 3500 yards (if you count all the splashing around I did on Monday).
Bike:
I had a trainer workout for an hour and I missed a duathon on Saturday because of rain so I rode for another 2 hours on the trainer on Sat.
Run:
I had 3 runs for 4 hours and 21.5 miles. One of which was a long run of 12 miles.
My coach really took it easy on me this week.
Now week 16 is a different story.
I have 3 swims, 3 runs and 2 bike workouts scheduled as well as a Half IM on Saturday. I won't do the swim because I'm not a fan of ice cold shark infested water but I will do the bike and run as a long brick day.

When I woke up this morning I finally decided to set a goal for this race. I didn't set any goals for my first Half IM except to finish and I did. But looking back, I wish I had pushed myself a little harder. When I started training for my IM I decided not to have any goals as well. But now I want to race, not just participate. I know I won't podium or even finish MOP, but I want to have something to shoot for. The way I had approached this race was to say that I have 2 hours for the swim, 8 hours for the bike and 7 hours for the marathon and not push myself hard at all. Through my training I have figured it will be closer to 1:10-1:25 for the swim, 6:30-:45 for the bike and ??? for the run. I really want to finish sub 13 hours and the only way I could do it will be to finish sub 5 for the marathon. So, that is my goal, 5 or sub 5 for the run. I am not a runner and this will be really hard for me but I am saying it publicly so that my fellow BTers will hold me to it. Any help, advice or support will be greatly appreciated.
Tom

Tom,

Good luck with the training this week. Once again you're an inspiration to anyone who even considers going to the IM distance. Good luck with your sub 5 goal, nothing like stating a goal to make it feel real!

Uh, Tom, you'd better check your calendar, because we only have 9 weeks and 5 days until IMAZ.  Du-Duh-Du-Dunh!  (Cue dramatic organ music.)

Aside from the workouts this week, which was also a recovery week for me, I found myself still eating a ton and then wanting to sleep even more than I do during a hard week.  Weird.

Time goals are a curious thing, especially for a first-time Ironman...  I know that I have some goals for the race, the foremost of which is to finish before midnight.  If that's in the bag, then I would like to finish before the sun goes down around 7PM.

In case anyone's curious, you can find my week's summary here:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/index-weekly.asp?memberid=1170&year=2005&month=1&day=30

Thanks again for posting these updates, Tom. I love reading them! So, sub-5 for the marathon would be about 11:00 pace. Looking at your logs, your long runs are about there right now. Do you think you'll be able to maintain that pace for the entire marathon? I think it's great that you have a goal time that you're pushing for in your IM -- very ambitious for your first IM! Probably your long bike/run bricks will give you a good idea of what your marathon pace might be -- if you're still doing 11:00 after a 100 mile ride, for instance, that looks promising. Keep it up!

Tom, my goal for this season of races is your Saturday afternoon workout! You rock!

I also agree that you will be able to get a pretty good idea of your run ability after the 1/2 brick on Saturday. Setting a goal is fantastic for keeping you focused on the race. If you don't make your 13 hour goal, however, you shouldn't be the slightest bit disappointed. You are challenging your body and mind in a way most people in this world will never do. Use your goals as motivation, not as a way to measure your success after you FINISH!

Wow, you've thrown down the 13 hour IM gauntlet - does your coach know? I'm proud to know ya' man. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the concept of 140.6 miles does not equal death Keep up the hard work Ironcow!

Do you see how there's a bunch of buttons at the bottom of your post? The one that says "Logs" takes us to your log... I think they are shared by default.

OK Tom,

If you can set a goal of a sub 5 hour marathon, then I can set a goal of a sub 4-hour bike leg on my 1/2 IM. It's funny but running has always been my weakest link but since I've been hitting the pavement I'm more disappointed in my cycling. So I've decided to focus on cycling this summer. I'm going to lay off the swimming and substitute cycling any chance I get.

We both will emerge victorious by accomplshing our goal. I have faith in Tom. And when it comes down to it isn't faith all you need?
