Swim
Comments: First "real" swim in a triathlon. Felt ok. I got kicked in the shoulder a couple of times at the start. I kept running over a gal in front of me. We seemed to be swimming at exactly the same pace, then she would slow and I just smashed into her. Could not get around her for a long time. It's like she had some bizarre sonar that would put her EXACTLY in front of me at exactly the moment I tried to pass. Ended up drifting onto the wrong side of the buoys and suddenly "hey, they are coming right at me!" I paddled merrily back and picked it up again, only to veer off course again. My hand hit something solid, I stopped and looked up and I had run into one of the surfboard-type lifeguards. He assumed I needed to rest, I said "no, I'm just navigationally challenged." Breaststroked my way oh-so-slowly at the turnround. Some people from the wave behind us were starting to pass me. In the back of my mind was "got to come in under 15 minutes". I was getting tired so opted for some backstroke and veered far off course. Someone was shouting "left! To your left" and I realized they were addressing me. I was actually cruising perpendicular to the course. Argh!!! Regained composure, settled in behind two gentlemen doing the breaststroke and just kind of bobbed along for a bit before picking up the crawl again. What would you do differently?: PRACTICE SIGHTING Transition 1
Comments: I had a suboptimal spot in transition, being about as far away from the bike out area as possible. Seemed like it took a long time to get from the rack to the exit. Bike
Comments: Don't remember too much about the bike. I have ridden this course numerous times and it seemed to flow pretty well. What would you do differently?: Push it harder. Transition 2
Comments: My legs were getting tired and I felt disoriented going into transition. It seemed like it took me a long time to get bike racked, race belt on, etc. Run
Comments: I don't run much in the sunlight, preferring early morning, and could definitely feel the affect of the heat. Took me FOREVER before I could feel my legs, they were wobbly and my knees were knocking into each other. Resigned myself to doing the short marathon shuffle. What would you do differently?: Probably practice running out in the heat and sunshine, plus more bike/run bricks. Post race
Warm down: Long hike from transition to my car, so that was my warm-down. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience, newbie mistakes. Last updated: 2008-07-27 12:00 AM
