Johnstown, Pennsylvania
United States
Greater Johnstown Community YMCA
83F / 28C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 39m 56s
Overall Rank = 29/124
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 6/11
Pre-race routine:

Oatmeal and coffee, load the bike, and hit the road. This is now the 3rd time that I've had 2 pieces of pizza the night before and this breakfast in the morning, and the body feels great.
Event warmup:

Quick 1/2 lap and a flip turn in the pool.
Swim
  • 06m 19s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

The Johnstown Y pool is great: really clear water and clean pool area.

Great swim. Wasn't super fast, but still faster than my threshold pace. Never really felt like I was struggling. Finished 3rd in the heat.
What would you do differently?:

A second or two faster each length and I would have won the heat, and looking at the other times, would have done well overall.
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Out the back door, across the alley, and into the transition area/parking lot. Lots of room to maneuver.

I need to work on transition. Maybe a 1-piece tri suit is the answer, and biking/running without socks. Also need to practice getting on the bike. I just could not get on it fast enough.
Bike
  • 1h 07m 17s
  • 20.8 miles
  • 18.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Great bike ride. Felt strong throughout. There were 2 hills that got me out of the saddle. Otherwise, it was typical western PA and I rode in the big ring a majority of the time.

Speedometer died 2 days ago, so I was estimating distance/pace, and was pretty accurate. However, the last 2 miles seemed like they went on forever due to the dead odometer and my lack of knowledge about the course. I kept expecting to turn a corner and be at transition.
What would you do differently?:

Replace batteries in the Cat-Eye at the first signs of low power.
Transition 2
  • 00m 17s
Comments:

This transition time is wrong, and probably was actually a minute. I wasted about 4 seconds drinking Gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Drink up on the bike as I'm heading into transition.
Run
  • 23m 57s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I went out a bit faster than I had anticipated and then decided to just stick with the pace. Felt great.
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention to the course so I have a sense of when I'm in the last 1/2 mile stretch.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I just didn't know the course, so had no sense of what was around the next corner.

Event comments:

Awesome race, which surprised me. Seriously well organized. Would definitely do this one again.
