Pre-race routine:

I loaded the car, packed and checked the bike the night before. Early to bed, but did not sleep too well. Up at 4:45 for usual breakfast - it was pouring rain outside with ocassional thunder and lightening. I questioned whether or not the event would be a go because T-storms were forecast all day. Anyway, the rain was warm so I mused that it could not be all that bad as long as I did not crash the bike! Worried that Rosalyn would get soaked while waiting for me. But as it turned out, the weather gods cooperated!
Event warmup:

Stretching
Swim
  • 31m 26s
  • 1584 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

A good swim for me. My sighting was better than usual and I felt strong the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

For me, this was a calm and orderly transition. It helped that I actually thought through what I would do in the T area before, and tried to execute the plan. For the most part, it worked. Almost got it down to under 3 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Still have trouble getting the bike shirt on due to everything being wet. Going to switch to a one piece outfit going foreward to avoid this step if possible.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 47s
  • 22.7 miles
  • 17.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice course. Around mile 5-6 there was a long hill that was very challenging - speed was probably not more than 9-11 mph the whole way here. Did not relish the fact that I had to do that hill again on loop 2!
What would you do differently?:

Set up Cateye before as I could not zero it out on the course. This was frustrating as it was a stupid oversight.
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Relatively smooth T2. Comfortable changes. There was a woman from L street who had completed the sprint and was by her bike. Actually stopped for a little chat, which added some time. But, hey - this is suppose to be fun!
What would you do differently?:

Chat longer!
Run
  • 53m 9s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Still a bit too hot for me as I struggle anytime the temps get > 65 and it is humid. Tried to keep a comfortable pace the whole way just concentrating on being comfortable, feeling not tired or too hot and tried to keep disciplined - no stoppiing, but walk at water stops to hydrate and douse in a couple of cups of water to cool off. It seemed to work. I was pleased to see that my overall pace was < 9 mpm.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Hydrated and walked. Went for a dip in the lake to cool off. Played some golf in the afternoon and went to a clambake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Age!

Event comments:

Very well run event. I may do this one again.

Nice race out there -- you sounded really relaxed and easy, but not lax, about the whole thing.  It's good to enjoy the day, enjoy the course and the camaraderie!

I liked that it was a smaller race, and well-run except for not having much food at the end.  Apples are great and all, but...well, at least the girl scouts came around with cookie packs.

Cheers, -Sunny

hey nice race!!

Little eqipment gliches can be over come easily in the future.  I always forgot to reset the bike computer.  I don't like one-piece trisuit as it's difficult to take off and get on before the race, but a 2-piece suit would work well.  Wear it on s/b/r and no need to mess with changing!

Great pace on the run, too.  What's your next race?
