Sunny
Total Time = 1h 10m 2s
Overall Rank = 107/1027
Age Group = First Timer
Age Group Rank = 5/129
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4. Usual breakfast of oatmeal w/ blueberries and bananas. Hydrated with water, Endurox and some Gatorade (ran out of EFS day before the race) and a couple cups of coffee. I felt strong and ready to race. Out the door by 5:30, arrived at park by 6:00 and another 25 min to get to my parking space. Got to transition and right to the port-a-potty where they were 25 deep. This was the most painful part of the day. I REALLY had to go.
Event warmup:

Got to the water @ 7:10 to loosen up. Never did an OWS before and found the water to be pleasant. Felt more confident about the swim now. Until...
my goggles broke right after the Nat'l Anthem. Luckily spotted my brother who was able to pick me up another pair. Got the new goggles on with 20 sec. to spare and got to the back of the starting line literally right at the gun.
Swim
  • 10m 11s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Chaos at the start. Got claustrophobic and had a hard time finding my groove hence my breathing and stroke suffered. Was able to find a few clear lanes and develop some kind of rhythm. I felt like I suffered and did poorly but I was one of the first to get out from my wave so I guess I did OK.
What would you do differently?:

Start at the front. Pack 2 pairs of goggles.
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Since this is my first I have nothing to compare it to. I felt like it went smoothly. I'm glad I practiced this aspect a few times before the race.
What would you do differently?:

Hustle.
Bike
  • 31m 43s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 21.76 mile/hr
Comments:

I knew I could make up some time here and I did. I'm glad I rode the course the day before so I knew what to expect. Got stuck behind a few racers who would not stay to the right and had to use the brakes more frequently than I would have liked to. Happy with my time but I could have possibly gotten a sub 30 min.
What would you do differently?:

More interval work in training. Be less tentative on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

I felt like it went OK but again nothing to compare it to.
What would you do differently?:

Jump off moving bike instead of coming to a complete stop. More hustle.
Run
  • 23m 58s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

The run started well. A bit crampy, but nothing I couldn't push through. My pace was a little slower on the way out. Once I got to the turnaround point I chatted it up with another runner for a minute or two. This actually helped me because I wasn't thinking of running. Before I knew it I felt an incredible 2nd wind and picked up my pace with longer strides. Finished very strong. Wasn't my best time, but better than my last 5K event by :01:02.
What would you do differently?:

Longer runs in training as well as more interval and speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

1 bottle of Endurox. 1 bottle of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience with OWS.
Racers riding in passing lane and not passing.
Lack of run/speed training.

Event comments:

This was my first tri and it seemed extremely well run. Such a positive vibe surrounding the entire event. I'm hooked and will return each year until I am physically incapable. Now looking forward to next season and planning out my races of which there will be a few. I just might be on my way to becoming a triathlete.

Tremendous first effort!  I was flying high about my time until I saw yours!  (I'm kidding of course, I'm still flying high ).  Seriously, you're wicked fast, especially on the bike.

I should have been in the same wave as you as it was also my first... but must have missed a checkbox during registration and started with my regular age group instead.  I guess next time we'll both be AG'ers.  See you next year.
