Subject: IM Training Plan - 'Be Iron Fit'

Has anyone followed Don Fink's 30 week plan in his book 'Be Iron Fit'?

I recently finished this book and found it to be very interesting.  Just curious if anyone has followed his Competitive Plan and how it worked in preparation for a IM...

I will be following the plan for my first IM next year. I have talked to others and read about things here on BT and it all seems positive. Don is local guy for me (in NJ). He and his wife do alot of coaching. Good people. Quality coaches.

I used the competitive plan to train for IMLP this year. I had a very good race. Ran a strong marathon. I will use that plan again if I pull the trigger on IMLP '09.

I like the structure of the plan. It has a consistent pattern from week to week so you can really get into a routine which is great if you have a full time job and other obligations.

I highly recommend it!

I am in week 26 of the 30 week competitive IM Training Plan for IMLOU and am very happy with it. I don't what kind of background you have in tri's but the training schedule he provides works.

The only changes I made was I did two HIM instead of 1 HIM and 1 Olympic. The 1st HIM I did a 5:42:42. The second HIM 5:11:24 6 weeks later as dress rehersal for Louisville. Hope this helps in your choosing a plan.

My man used the 30 week intermediate plan last year for his first IM (IMWI) with success (disclaimer: he did skip the strength training component and changed some swim workouts).  His only marathon to date was done at IMWI, and he ran it very strong.

He is planning on following the Competitive plan for an IM next year.  I am still deciding between the intermediate and competitive plan (the main difference is a weekend brick, if I recall correctly).

Even if you don't follow the plan, the book had really good advice on time management.

I followed it for IMLP this year. It's a great plan that has you doing lots of bricks. My legs felt great when I got off the bike at IMLP, so I guess all the bricks worked. I would definitely reccomend this plan.

Thanks everyone.  It is great to hear all the positive feedback.   I agree with the structure of the training in that it seems like it would be easier to get into a routine; especially working full-time and spending time with the family.

Good luck to everyone and their upcoming IMs.

When I attend TTU, it was embarrassing to watch Nebraska steam roll TTU.  However, this year with a pre-season rank of 13; I am feeling confident.

Watch out for the Red Raiders this year.  They will win the BIG 12; guaranteed.

I will be doing my second IM following this plan. I did IM CDA last year and IMKY this year. I did all of the workout, but occassionally altered the days I did them on due to weather, work and family obligations. Both times I did the competitive version. I never have had a problem with injuries.

I read the book and he talks of people reaching there goal with minimal experiance.  What type of base would be ideal for starting the program?

I am following the competitve plan for Louisville.  I really like the plan and have felt great during the training.  This is my first week of taper.  I'll let you know how things go after August 31st.  :-)
