I ran a half marathon in Iraq with a flak jacket, helmet and a rifle in 102 degrees F. In May 2003. I think I lost 10 pounds that day.

Ha! You win. Wow, that sucks. Good for you for doing it.

Here's my weird/dangerous/remote run from Sep. 1, 2007:

DO NOT, under any circumstances, run with the Hash House Harriers. Unless you're in Bali on holiday, in which case it could be one of many delightful death-defying adventures you have in one day.

Seriously, I can't quite put into words what an amazing experience this was. You follow a 'treasure trail' marked by bits of paper ... but beware, you might get misled. Anyhow ... the 'trail' ... calling it a mountain goat rut would have been a major overstatement for much of the route. The path took me through a maze of rice paddies (ever run on the crumbling 6-inch wide earth dividers? I have), jungle in which the foliage and six-legged wildlife munched my limbs, over river gorges with 50-foot drops where you crossed on a pole of bamboo ... and that was the easy-to-follow navigable stuff.

I did get really lost, it was near sunset, and I almost cried. Almost. Then I realized that even if I didn't know from whence I came or to where I was going, all I had to do was walk towards the nearest line of smoke (cooking fire) and ask the locals where to go.

I have travelled all over the world and in my own vast country and I have never seen such beauty as I saw on that run. I can't describe it. I'm glad I didn't have a camera--for one thing I probably would have been sleeping in a rice paddy had I taken one minute longer--but also that the immense, intense sensory experience was just for me, just in that moment.

Anyway ... I found the nearest farmer, who was so kind and took me to the nearest village, where a daughter knew where the silly Hashers and their beer truck were, and took me on the back of her motor scooter there. The warmth and hospitality of my people never fail to amaze me.

I ran a 5K with my Military Working Dog- Barry and my M16 around our base in Qatar in 1998.  It was only like 93 F out, so you can't really call that hot but it was weird and dangerous, and remote.

That's awesome.  I'm moving to Okinawa in January and have heard of group runs similar to the one you wrote about.  Looking forward to that experience.

If it's the Hash House Harriers, yep! They are a blast to run with, and have a particularly, um odd reputation in Asia.

Some of the scenery out there will also be beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

Nothing anywhere near that "dangerous"... although I sometimes run into some "thug-wanna-be's" on my creek trail if I go at the "wrong" time (dusk).  If I'm alone, I sometimes feel a little vulnerable, but then I remember that the trail backs up to lots of houses and that if I started screaming bloody murder (or "fire" like I was taught" people would come help.

But most of my runs are very very safe.

Yonkers, New York in my "way" not safe neighborhood (drive by shooting, major gang and drug activity). I'm surprised I never got jumped (did get hit with a peach once)... though not Iraq, no IED's or militants to contest with, just punk kids.

A certain BTer I run with has been known to strip down nekkid.
It was a nice view.
:)

Edit: Weirdest was a race from a Brewery to a Brewery in the back highways of Kansas, a 44-mile relay. Costumed. Drinking heavily. Pics here.

North Slope Alaska... Summer '99... I was an intern w/ BP
The different oil fields up there host 5k's to get everyone out and moving....

Most interesting one was actually the drive to it... saw three grizzly cubs and mama on the way (triplets in the world of bears are extremly rare)

Most dangerous of them... was marking the route for our field's race.... it was dusk (yes it does get dusky up there for an hour or two in the summer) and while my manager was marking the course w/ flour I was standing in the back of the truck scanning for bears.... thankfully there were none that morning, just foxes

Yes, this may be typical for those that work on the slope or live in the area... but it was a rare delight for me.

Last week I ran out onto a low tide bar off a small cape just outside of Halifax. At one point I was far enough out there that if I didn't turn back immediately I wasn't going to make it before the tide came back in... and even a triathlete doesn't have much of a chance during a tide change in the Bay of Fundy.

Yes, I'm stupid.

I'm with you--ran over 1000 miles in Baghdad this past tour, and during a couple we did have to go into the bunkers to avoid incoming mortars/rockets, and occassionaly the errant bullet round made it over the wall--nothing like hearing the incoming alarm and the "whiz" of a bullet to throw some interval sprints in as you head to the bunker!   Those runs got me addicted to this whole mess though, and make for some fun stories...after the fact!

I've done some runs in the mountains or strange cities where no one knew where I was going...

But yours definitely beats mine by a mile (or 10)...

Eh...couple runs on dirt roads in rural central Ontario, I suppose.

The snowpack was a little too deep for running, but I did wander off from my tour group on a little impromptu hike in Antarctica...and got chewed out by the tour staff when I got back...

(Probably wasn't the wisest thing in the world to get out of sight of the Zodiacs, I guess...)

Toxic auto paint fumes on this mornings run through an industrial area ranked pretty high up there on the hazard list.

Not even gonna try and touch your story.  I live in Suburbia Dallas.  I mean we have some coyotes but that is it.

The hog story was funny though.

I did a "sprint" triathlon at the Kuwait City airport in 1991: Running, crawling, and praying.

I was FOP on the praying, and it turns out I can run pretty damn fast when I am scared. My crawling probably still needs work.......

This is in line with the Yonkers post above - "dangerous and remote"

I don't remember how many years ago this was...I think it was 2000. I had to do about 6 miles and I didn't run earlier, so I went for an evening run and by the time I was running through Prospect Park, Brooklyn it was dark. There are two sides to the park, one "good" on the side of Park Slope and one "less good" (at night, in the dark, where peeps are just hanging out) on the side of Flatbush. I realized after the fact, that a 30 yr old chick should not be running the loop of the park all alone in the dark. Yes, there was a (small) handful of other runners out at the time. But there is still crime in that park and i never did it again after that. I freaked myself out during the run, but the adrenaline kept me going. No one was gonna fk w me.

I ran at night on a United Arab Emeratee base in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The temp was a cool 90ish and the camel spiders came out on the "roads" at night and would actually run at my feet.

12:15 AM run along the freeway feeder at the airport. What made it a bit dicey was the construction in the area. I had to run a section about 400 meters long on top of the concrete barrier wall they installed to divert traffic. Fall right and I was in traffic, fall left and it was 6-7 feet below to the mud. Oh and every 15 meters or so they had one of those reflective "lolipop" signs sticking up through the barrier I had to dodge.
