I am at the point of no return. After a DNF at IMFL in 2003 I completely stopped training for 5 years and balooned to over 240. I was a complete couch potatoe. Last winter a buddy of mine really wanted to do an IM so we signed up for IMFL 2009. It wasn't until we did a 1/2 IM in May of this past year that reality hit me. I finished in just under 8 hours and all the bad memories from IMFL came back. Since then I have been consistant with my training and should complete my 3rd and last century ride 3 weeks from now. I have never been a great runner or biker but the challenge of the IM this year has really turned things around for me physically. I've probably got a 60/40 chance of finishing but its been rewarding getting back into the whole training thing. I've got the upmost respect for anyone willing to commit to an IM.

Would appear that I'm in too!
Just started training for my first sprint (hopefully in April) and I've managed to get my mate interested too. He wants to see if we can do an IM before his 40th which is in 5.5yrs

Count me in too!

I am doing my first Olympic this weekend and am already looking at a HIM in February 2010. I just ran my first ever 10k this morning and feel fantastic. I have a goal of hitting a full Ironman in 2011, but being about 100lbs overweight I have some serious work to do.

Good luck to all.

I started back on 4/15/06 -- I went running for for the first time in15 to 20 year. I've dropped may be 30 pounds.

Well, I just got a slot to kona for my first Ironman. So I guess I'm in on this challenge.

I've been a slacker on this forum.  I did finish my ironman.  It was a great experience. While I did not have the race that I was hoping for it was a magic day for a magic journey.

Count me in.  I have been out of triathlons for the last year due to having a baby.  A baby changes everything.  Since then I have packed on the weight, and I can't stop thinking about finishing an Ironman.  I have done a total of 5 sprints, a half marathon, and several 5k in the past.  I'm a slow but steady type of person.  I don't really like sprints because they are way to fast, and I start to feel like I'm getting into my grove once I am finished.  When I did the half marathon, but pace for the last 6 miles was faster than my first 7 miles.  I feel like the longer distances are better suited for me because of this.  I plan to do a sprint or two next year just to get back into the grove of things.  Then in 2011 I hope to finish an early year HIM follow by IM Florida at the end of the year.  I may be pushing it a little, but the IM Florida in 2011 is my only focus right now.

I wish everyone the best of luck.

I wasn't on the couch, but was completely anti-cardio for 26 years.  I was a wimp all through hich school, and had back surgery 2 days after my 18th birthday.  I emerged from the hospital 5' 7", 82 lbs.  That is not a typo, 82 lb 18 yr old male.

I was always in a strugle to add weight and muscle, so I worked with weights and avoided any serious cardio untill I was 44 and I usually weighed 138 to 144.  My peak weight was 148 at two periods, but that was eating raw eggs and protein shakes.  I thought that cardio would only make me thiner.

A friend from college told me about his sprint tri experience and in Febuary I commited in my mind and started training.  I eliminated 80% of my weight training and eliminated any weight work with my legs, and added 8 to 10 sessions of S/B/R a week.

I don't own a pair of scales, but was at a house in about July and jumped on thier scales.  146, I had actually gained weight.  I was amazed at how I had retained muscle, even added significant muscle to my legs with no freeweight work.

Did my first sprint in August at 45, then felt even more motivated to train.  I have an IM in the back of mind, but figured I would work hard this winter inside, then evaluate things in the Spring when I can get outside to see what my S/B/R times and distances are.  I figure at least an Oly, and half mary for 2010, but maybe a HIM.

Hey Paul, this is totally awesome. I will be following your blog. As everyone else said, you can definitely do this and you have a lot of people rooting for you. Way to go!
Kelly (doing IM Lake Placid this summer, started doing tris in 2004--wasn't a couch potato, but had just given birth to my son so the "five years to an Ironman" thing totally fits)

I'm in - Shooting for Rev3 Cedar Point  or IMKY 2011- that gives me about 18 months from new years resolution 2010 to 140.6 Hadn't stepped foot in a gym in almost 3 years never ran more than 3 miles even in college.  Started at 5'6" 190lbs around christmas  ( up from a wrestling weight in the 140's during college) - so far so good  hovering around 170 and definitely seeing a difference. Have 1 sprint , 1 Oly and hopefully 1 HIM planned for what I am sure will feel like one of the longest years of my life

after I quit wrestling I vowed to never go to bed hungry again - that lead to considerable weight gain and lots of lazy - after 8 years I'm ready to be in shape again and I think Tri's are the way to do it.

In my opinion, make the college graduation, it's only one day "wasted"...  and it's a big deal... (especially for your parents, now that I am one I can understand that... ) :-)

I was forced to miss mine due to a car vs motorcycle accident (I was the motorcycle in the equation)...  I pretty much regret it.

Other then that have fun...  :-)
