Subject: Almost wrecked
on yesterday's ride, traveling on a fast flat section a car overtakes me and than decides to make a right turn into a driveway, about 15 feet in front of me. I managed to come off the aero bars, hit the brakes, unclip one foot and perform a fishtailing skid that peeled off just enough speed to allow me to get around the back of the car with about 2 inches to spare.

I've already been hit by a car in an intersection and now take extra precautions when traveling through them. I'm not sure how you can protect yourself against the right hand turn though. What's the best way to avoid this dangerous situation other than sitting up everytime a car passes you?

On the bright side I was pleased that I was able to pulled such a manuever to aviod the crash, I bet it looked really cool.

Almost is a good thing! Keep on with the defensive biking mentality, I usually have at least one almost per ride! I would rather sit up any day than replace a bike or worse.

Sorry to hear that.  Really not much you personally could do other than get idiot drivers off the road.

From the situation that you describe, there is not much you can do. It does sound like a very aggressive move by the driver. If the facts are as you described I would have stopped and had words with the driver as its sounds like an intentional "in your face" type of manuever.

Mount a .50 caliber on the handlbars?  I don't know how to avoid it, but that's a fairly common maneuver by dickweed drivers.  If I had a dollar for every time a car overtook me and then turned right directly in front of me, why, I'd have lots of dollars.

Nice save.

I had an LA city bus do that exact same thing to me (okay, it was making a right turn from the wrong lane--not turning right into a driveway--while overtaking me on my left as I was riding in a BIKE LANE no less) on Tuesday...I had no room to get around the bus...managed to skid to a stop with not much more room to spare (before I'd have run into his rear wheel well)...

Lot of morons out there...really chaps my butt when the morons are getting PAID to drive like morons...

I think I would have stopped and did something bad. In my younger years I had people do stuff like that to me on my motorcycle and I got along side of them and took their mirror off..
I'm older and have a little more control now. But I think I still would have flipped.
