Newport Naval Station, Rhode Island

Naval Station Newport MWR
81F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 31m 34s
Overall Rank = 45/117
Age Group = M 30-37
Age Group Rank = 9/24
Pre-race routine:

Bananna and gu with water. Packed car and off to Newport. Got things unpacked and racked. Transition set up was workable although things were a little tight.
Event warmup:

1/2 mile run with full stretching routine. 100 yd swim to get loose 5 minutes before the start.
Swim
  • 11m 53s
  • 586 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well I think I smoked the swim but 2 min per 100 is way slow for me. The course could have been long as there were a few people commenting on this after the race. Found feet to draft off of and I was hanging in pretty well. Small problem with goggles but I did not do a good job making sure that they were fit properly. Came out of the water in the top 10 or so and passed most of the first wave...did not expect that at all.
What would you do differently?:

Not much...pretty happy with it!
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

I need to figure out the whole running mount/dismount thing.
Bike
  • 45m 21s
  • 16 miles
  • 21.17 mile/hr
Comments:

OK...I did not expect to blast the bike this hard. I did not get passed all that much and I actually passed a few people. Some of the 3rd and 4th wave go fast guys passed me toward the end but overall I think I had a very strong ride.
What would you do differently?:

Possibly gone a little harder as the boss thinks that I held back a bit.
Transition 2
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

I have no idea what I was doing for 2 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Get the Zoot running shoes.
Run
  • 30m 21s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Uggghh...

I guess running 8:40s is pretty respectable but I really need to drop about 25 more pounds. I definately lost buckets of time on the run but, again, this was expected.
What would you do differently?:

Not weigh 230 at the start.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around in circles with a big smile.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight...I really think I can drop 2 min per mile off of my run with another 30 or so pounds gone.

Event comments:

This was a really good race. I am very happy with the swim and the bike...the run, not so much. I usually can judge how I did from my wife's reaction. She seem genuinely surprised where I finished...quite honestly so was I.

For a first year race this was outstanding. Two words: omlet station. Yes...at the finish they had cooks doing omlets and pancakes. Plenty of everything. Very nice.

Great post! Good job!
I used to be stationed in Newport, I wish I had the opportunity to race.
I hope to do it next year, if they have it again.
