Subject: bike maintenance familiarity
how good are people at fixing their bicycles on the fly?
I was wondering:
1. What are themaintenance skills that I should be able to perform, considering I'd like to get up to IM distance?
2. How quickly should I be able to do each of them?
3. What's the best way to learn?

Thank you!

1. At a minimum, you should be able to expediently change a flat tire (front/rear) as well as make minor brake adjustments.
2. Fast.
3. You can improve by practicing.

The bare minimum list......
1. change tires (practice will get you faster)
2. keep chain lubed (do ahead of time)
3. Adjust brakes to keep them from dragging or failing to stop you (do ahead of time)
4. Minor tweaking of cable adjusters to keep bike shifting smoothly (do ahead of time)
If you do proper maintanence, you should not have to fix anything "on the fly" under race conditions except maybe changing a tire.
Some bike shops offer classes. Park Tools has a great website. Lots of folks reccommend Leonard Zinn's books too.
