For those of you who have a road bike and a tri bike, do you opt to use your road bike for certain races? under what conditions?

So far, I have only raced on my road bike (which I have had fitted to be more aero), but am in the process of getting a tri bike. I am racing in the Age Group Nationals this year (with the goal of not being last ) and I am wondering which bike to take since it is a hilly course?

Thanks for your input!

Define hilly. There's hills and then there are hills.

If you can't stay aero for most of the race then I would go for the road bike. Unless its an alpine race you're really not going to make up time on the descents, even then I would choose a road bike for the handling. If its really technical the road bike is an asset.

If its just rolly then the TT bike is still probably your best bet. You'll really have to make the call yourself.

Once you get used to the Tri Bike then hills can be attacked just as well.  When I first got mine I was much faster on hills using the road but after practice and hard work I am actually faster using the Tri bike.
