Bronwyn - Good luck and enjoy! Warning - in addition to being a lot of fun, it can be highly addictive! Good food afterwards too and they have a raffle for prizes I think either before or after awards.

Oh, BTW, everyone. If you haven't done this race before, you do have to walk from the parking area and haul your stuff in on race day. About 3 or so blocks I believe. There's good parking that they'll be setting up in a couple of areas. But, no parking near the transition area in the park itself.

Hope I'm not jinxing this but the weather is shaping up nicely and can't beat this for August:

Temps start out in the mid 60s climbing to low 80s by noon
Winds generally west 3-7 mph
Chance of rain - < 15%
Little cloud cover (sunscreen)
Fairly low humidity

With the short bout of warm weather this week, water temp reading at Harve de Grace is 81.

Expect to not wear wetsuits but bring anyway just in case.

BTW, when you come into town, what was really nice last year was a big banner sign welcoming us to North East! Good luck again to all and I'll take bib numbers/names with me just in case I see any of you.

Since the race starts at 7:30-ish, there will really be no need for sunscreen, even for the 3+ hour finishers.

My wife and I are making a weekend out of it (our anniversary was yesterday) and after picking up the race packet we are going to drive the course and then check in to our bed and breakfast, then go up to Philly for a really nice dinner.

In other words ....... my Saturday is booked full!

Got in the pool with the speedsuit today messing around a little just in case they do say it is a non-wetsuit swim.  I wish I could swim as fast in an open water tri as I can in the pool!!  Well, hopefully they will allow wetsuits so that I can get some sort of advatange back in the water and not come out of the swim 10 minutes behind the leaders in my AG like usual.  I hate trying to chase people down on the bike and run.

Yeah, still thinking HIM distance I guess. Yeah, I hear ya as far as chasing down folks go. Will probably be there again on Sunday. Might surprise myself, though.

Good luck again!

Speak for yourself... I'm a redhead and I burn inside in bright light :-)  You'll see my sweet farmers tan at the swim start.

Did my packet pickup and then did a walkthrough of the transition area. It's a verrry lonnng way from the end of the swim back to the transition area. Water temp was posted as 74F meaning that it will be wetsuit legal unless something funny happens overnight. I've got my wetsuit, but should I wear it?

Also drove the bike course. I am very glad to see that there are no bad OMG hills, but the rolling hills seem to just keep coming and coming.

I've got most of the BT names and bib numbers so I hope to meet some of you tomorrow.

Have a great race everyone!

I hope everyone had a great race. My swim was much slower than hoped but I did well on the bike and I did a triathlon PB on the run.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought so.  My swim time was WAY off but I swear this was my best swim to date.  Hope you guys had a great time out there today too!  Sorry I didn't get to catch up with any of you.

I was not at all happy with my swim .... it was terrible, even without the wetsuit.

Then I got a front flat and took a lot longer than I should have changing it, lost about 7 minutes there on the bike.  Still put up an average bike time for the AG though.  My transitions were nice and solid and my run was nyah, but still good enough for 3rd in my AG.

2:36 overall time, 9th in AG (don't know how I pulled that off).  Would have been top 5 without the flat ......

It looks there was a timing error for the swim, but at least it appears to be a consistent timing error that doesn't affect rankings. Top AG times in the 23:xx range? Hmmmm, don't think so. I'm guessing the absolute "starting time" that all waves are measured against is off by about 5 or 6 minutes.

Nice job Rick.  Bummer about the flat.  I was pointing out glass to slower riders on the shoulder throughout a good bit of the portion after the turnaround... it was everywhere.  Not sure if that's where you got a flat but I'm sure others sucked up some glass there.  I was pretty worried I had at one point.

I was wearing a stop watch for the swim and my times agree with theirs so a timing error is unlikely. I think the course was about 100-150m too long.

I had a wonderful time yesterday.  It was an awesome experience.  I want to thank everyone who gave supportive shout outs along the way.  They really kept me going....esp. on the hills on my mountain bike Laughing.   For my first tri I couldn't have asked for better.

I'd say closer to 300M too long if that's the case. I didn't wear a watch yesterday, but my swim for the sprint was about 5:xx slower than it should have been even with the long run to T1 factored in (I'm not a terribly fast swimmer, but pretty consistent from race to race).

And thank you to all of the really fast folks who signed up for the oly instead of the sprint. You allowed me to take home 1st in my AG and place top ten overall, a feat that is normally waaaaayyyyy out of reach for this MOPer

Hey, congratulations to all those that finished yesterday under some pretty good race conditions! Hopefully all you folks new to this are now hopelessly addicted. Yeah, saw that broken glass after the turn around on 272 and one guy changing the tire on his front wheel (don't think it was you Rick cuz I was way back). Unfortunately, I DNF'd due to a mechanical on my bike. No way to continue safely. I broke a cardinal rule - don't change anything on your bike the day before a race unless conditions really warrant it.

And to make matters worse, a friend of mine competing crashed badly 300 yards from the transition area. They took him to a nearby hospital to get checked. He's okay overall - no broken bones or stitches. Just a lot of scrapes, scratches, and nasty bruises. Heard another guy crashed and had nasty road rash on his back. Saw him at transition. Apparently, he hit the same manhole cover my friend did coming down that hill just before the right turn as you cross over 272 back to transition.

Well, onto other events and races! I'll probably try to redeem myself next year.

Hope the rest of the tri season goes well for all of you!

Sorry to hear your day didn't go as planned.

By the time I got to the manhole someone was there to warn me about it.  I could see how dangerous that was.  I was talking to my father about it after the race.  That sucks that some got hurt.

My goal was to finish and not walk any of the run.  All in all I ended my first season on a good note for me.  Considering I got my first (non-kids BMX) bike in December, learned how to swim in January and ran 6 miles for the first time in March. I am pretty happy!  It was a great day!  I look forward to seeing you guys at the next race.

Rick, I need some serious bike help!!  17.2 mph avg doesn't cut it.

Sorry about your bike and your friend taking a spill, Dave.  My uncle saw the other guy you speak of and said "what is that red stuff that guy has on his back?"  Unfortunatley it was road rash.  It was a perfect outline of his singlet and looked like it hurt.  Thank god for helmets.

Geoff, nice job!  The bike will come.  That course was more than rolling so don't cut yourself short.

Bronwyn, glad you had good first tri!  Hopefully you'll be back for more.

That could have been me changing the flat ...... it was not long after the turnaround and with my atrocious swim (38:02) I was not exactly at the front of the field for my AG.  As MDhillslug said, my watch reflected exactly the time that they gave me, so it was just long ...... I was also thinking about 2 - 300 rads or so based on my other swim splits.  But everyone had to swim longer, not just me, so all the times were slower.

I passed when the ambulance was there and they were waving people around.  Sucks for your friend, but at least he was not really hurt badly!

Geoff?  All I can say is "ride lots" .... throw in a little "ride harder" and you will get there!  Remember, I've got years of road racing experience in my legs even if my yearly mileage is not up there with the rest of the fast people so I've got a lot of base to fall back on.

Yeah, after looking at the sprint results I was thinking that I could have easily placed in that race if not win the overall.  And originally the sprint was my plan, but I jumped up to the oly. for the heck of it.  Oh well, lesson learned.
