it won't bother me to stop a couple times during the bike to take a leak.  sometimes just a 30sec respite from pedaling makes me feel a heckuva lot better anyway.

during the run, on the other hand, i'm literally scared to stop for anything.  my knee feels okay while running, but when I stop, i fear that i won't be able to get going again because of the pain that sets in very quickly.

jayhawkfirefighter - 2008-08-10 1:14 PM Again, I'm new at the IM distance so excuse my ignorance but . . . In a race you'll have other riders in close proximity. DOn't you run the risk of hitting them with spray, mist, or splatter. And what are the peeing rules in IM? Can you get DQed for going behind a tree? So if I'm going to be peeing down my leg during the race, I should have some baby wipes and new shorts in my run bag? This is all good stuff people. Keep the pee tips coming!!!!

spray and mist, probably not a really big deal...if you "splatter" someone, you are going to get a beating I'll bet! If ther is ANY splattering chances are you are doing IT wrong!

I have read a lot here about peeing on the bike/yourself, but what about peeing while running?  Same concept?

Yep...I just go and if it isn't raining I then toss a cup or two of water on myself at next aid station...I end up peeing a lot just before or at aid stations on the run if need be.

I did this for the first time last week ina  HIM. Just a couple observations

1. If you can do it on a downhill, you can probably stay in the aero position and not lose any time at all.

2. peeing right before an aid station meant I was far less worried about getting something on my bottles, I was tossing them anyhow.

3. Bike shoes with drain holes really are a MUST and have a bottle of clean water handy for rinsing (I stuck mine in my jersey pocket so it didn't get peed on)

Did my first HIM in June and peed on the bike for the first time.  I stood with one leg down.  Pulled my shorts down and peed.  Didn't have to worry peeing on myself, the bike, nothing.  Just watch for traffic.

In training this is would be considered indecent exposure, in a race it would be a violation of both rules and the law.

I guess you have never peed behind a tree on a ride either.  If you got caught would that be indecent exposure also?  Have you never peed in public at some time or another?  You don't have to sell tickets to the event, just use some discretion.

I stopped at an aid station once during my ride at IMCDA. There were 2 honeybuckets and no waiting. While I was in the bucket, volunteers replaced my nearly empty bottles, pointed my bike in the right direction, brought a selection of food (I took a banana) and held my bike for me. This cost me maybe 60 seconds. Since I was not in contention for the podium, the stop was well worth it.

I love the volunteers at IMCDA. If it weren't for them, this sport would not be as fun as it is.

Yes and sure I have done that, all I am saying is during a race, just pee in you shorts, don't whip it out! That's just dumb and asking for trouble!

Ok- so I can pee while riding- but I have always done it with tri shorts on... I am planning  (I think) on wearing bike shorts for IM. Isnt that just going to absorb everything?  ick

I did a HIM a few weeks ago and except for peeing in a porta-john before the race began (swim was canceled, otherwise doing it in the water would have been a no-brainer) I didn't pee at all on the bike OR the run.

Is that bad?

Conditions were comfortable, sunny, probably upper 70's low 80's, humidity I believe was relatively normal for SW Michigan.
