Overall Rank = 9/59
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 2/6
Pre-race routine:

I got up much earlier. Too early this time. I was the first to arrive at the course, first to park, first to check in, and first to rack my bike. All before day break.

Participation was low. Normally about 4-6 more guys faster than me and 20-40 slower would have shown up.
Event warmup:

Ran for only 2 minutes and stretched.
Run
  • 14m 9s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

The time was good for me, and the comparison of me to the 85+ USAT guys showed an improvment, but my percentile comparison to the placement within the field has been much better. I attribute this to a lack of participants.

I tried to work a decent amount on the run and am happy with the result.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Took my time in transition. Had a crappy crappy time clipping into my pedals again. I really don't have it down yet, but am not sure why I am so bad at it when I need it most.
What would you do differently?:

Clip in better. I took about 10-15 seconds trying to get clipped in (i deally a 2-3 second job)
Bike
  • 41m 30s
  • 16.14 miles
  • 23.33 mile/hr
Comments:

I purposely went slower on this course in order to do better on the runs. I ended up getting the fastest bike time anyway.

I drank much less than normal, must be because of the cooler temperatures. Because I did not cramp during the run in spite of the lesser amount.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

A bit of traffic at my stop gave me some running trouble on an inclined grassy slope, but no biggy.

I felt like I did not take my time in this transition, but the time shows that I did not fly through it either. Since I took it easier on the bike, I was really ready to get after a good run (good for me).
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 24m 14s

Same as above:

No cramps, no stretching, no stopping.

I actually was hoping I was faster than this, but oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. My family never showed up and that had me worried. It turned out that the boys were not happy to get up after the tough camping trip the day before.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Can't run fast yet. I've thrown in the towel for getting good run times this year. I may still improve, but the level I wanted to achieve will not happen. Still, I am happy to know I tried and my efforts will serve as foundation for next year. Plus, two races to got this year.

Event comments:

The site was not a petty place to race, but all courses were perfectly fine. The site was in the middle of an industrial quarry area. As usuall UltraFit had a USAT official there to explain rules to the beginners and police the bike course.

This was a good time for me. An even better comparison for how I did than my time is that I was closer to the times of some key top competitors than I normally am. In short, I gained some on the top competitors.
