So, just heard on the radio that during one of the beach volleyball events, one of the American girls lost her wedding ring in the sand....

FIRST - I thought you couldn't wear jewlery during volleyball competition.  I KNOW that's a fact for indoor...  But that's neither hear nor there.

What would you do?  Stop play in the OLYMPICS to look for it?  Play it out and look later?  Get the metal detector out after the match?

Interesting situation...

In the OWS I did this summer one of the local masters swimmers put his wedding ring (a gift from his grandfather) on the harbor floor. He kept going and somehow managed to stay in fairly high spirits (despite the ring loss and losing his lunch halfway through the swim).

They played it out and looked the next morning, I think--with a whole bunch of volunteers, a fine-toothed rake, and a metal detector.

I don't know why Kerri plays with her ring, especially with all of the blocking she does. I've jammed fingers and had the knuckles swell up enough to know that I wouldn't want to wear any rings while playing (lest I eventually have to cut one of them off).

Um, why wear your ring when you're playing?!

I say that but I've had my ring fall off TWICE at the pool, found it both times, and once NEARLY fall off during the Chicago Accenture. The opposite happens when I run or bike -- my fingers swell to the point it hurts. And when I lift, it's just painful.

PM Um, why wear your ring when you're playing?!

Apparently her husband always wears his ring when he is playing...

Personally, I ditch my rings when I workout or race.  Between either the prospect of losing them or my fingers swelling up, it's just not worth it.

Thus the reason I don't have a ring anymore.  I took mine off before playing and placed it on the bench when I was changing or it fell out of my shoe where I placed it.  I think someone may have taken it, too.

I don't wear any jewerly when I'm participating in a sport.  I'd rather not take the chance of losing something.  I do know a lot of volleyball players that wear their wedding bands though.  I've never jammed my ring finger (actually have never seen anyone jam their ring finger) but I'm sure it can happen.  I'm more worried about it falling off than having to get it cut off for whatever reason.  If I jam a finger that badly, it's probably the least of my worries

I did notice Nicole Branagh was wearing earrings in her match!  That doesn't seem like a good idea if you get hit in the ear with the ball or by another player.  Yikes!

I was watching that match and saw when she lost it. They didn't stop for more than 5 seconds and looked down. I figured that was what happened.

I took my wedding ring off a few years ago to do an OWS in Mexico. I gave the ring to my wife for safe keeping and went off to swim. I come back to point A 30 minutes later and a bunch of people are walking around in ankle deep water searching..... for the wedding my ring my wife slung off her thumb waving down the waiter for another cerveza.

They did a segment about it last night on the prime-time coverage.

After the point was finished, she motioned to the ref that she lost it.  They pulled up the replay and saw, in the slow-mo, the direction it flew in and the general location in the sand.  I don't know if they stopped play at that point or after the match, but they had about 20 volunteers searching through the sand for it.  The one that found it got a bunch of stuff from her, including a signed visor.

The ring is engraved with "Six Feet of Sunshine" which is something that her husband called her during one of their first dates so it was, obviously, very meaningful to her.  Now for her matches she tapes it on her finger.

(I watch WAYYYY too much TV.  )

I know, right? I once got hit hard in the side of the head during hitting warmups (my fault, I was in the line of fire and not paying attention) and I was SO glad that it was league & team policy not to wear jewelry.
