Swim
Comments: No jostling/bumping or contact of any kind! I started out strong, maybe a bit too fast and was getting out of breath so slowed a little bit. Thought I was sighting well, but ended up straying pretty far to the inside. Corrected and rest of swim was uneventful. What would you do differently?: Sight more frequently and start out a little slower with the plan on picking up the pace later into the race. Transition 1
Comments: UGH! Everything that could go wrong, did. Had lots of trouble getting legs and arms out of wet suit. Trouble getting socks on, too. Then had trouble getting bike off rack. Was a few paces away from my area when I realized I had forgotten to put my race belt on, so had to go back for that. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Maybe slow the pace down a little bit at the end of the swim so that I'm not so blitzed coming into transition? Bike
Comments: Burned myself out a little on the timed hill climb which came just a couple of miles into the race. The rest of the race was relatively uneventful; though I did get caught up in traffic in the middle of the course and had to coast awhile to avoid getting drafting penalties. Also got behind a couple of very timid competitors heading into T2 which slowed me down a lot. Serves me right for sandbagging! What would you do differently?: Push a little harder on the bike, especially towards the end. Transition 2
Comments: See above regarding getting stuck behind a couple of timid people. What would you do differently?: Nothing, really. Run
Comments: I purposely held back a little on the bike so that I had some momentum left for the run. It worked! I felt pretty good on the run, but apparently not well enough to have a great time. I think I would have had an equivalent run time even if I had hammered on the bike. What would you do differently?: Maybe I held too much back in the run, because I felt a little too good throughout. Warm down: Just some walking immediately after finishing. Some fresh fruit and a bagel. Changed clothes soon because I was wet and chilly! What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor training for the four days leading up to the race in addition to two weeks of less-than-optimal sleep. Last updated: 2008-02-07 12:00 AM
