Subject: Recommend a Denver bike shop please!

I've been so excited to come back to Denver and buy a bike from the shop that's been so good to me all these years.  Unfortunately they have very few options for what i'm looking for.  I liked what they did have, but I definitely want to do some more test riding before I make a decision.  I'm feeling lost and orphan-like w/out a shop to go to so can someone suggest a good one?  I want to make sure I don't buy from just anywhere and that I find somewhere I'll feel good about going back to for tune ups and all that.  Ugh just thinking about this purchase stresses me out, though I'm so excited to have a new bike!  Anyway please send me your suggestions ASAP!

Thanks!

Where are you? How far do you want to drive for test rides? (welcome back)

I'm in the DU area.  I'm willing to drive some, but no cross-country treks or anything!

My favorite store is BikeSource (countyline and university).  They have been really helpful to me (so I have bought my last 2 bikes there).  Hans is their fitter is the best in town (my opinion).  They now also have a store at colorado and yale.  Not far from DU.  They sell a many brands and have a good selection of tri bikes, roadies and mountain bikes.  They know their stuff.

Personally, I've had fantastic service from Bicycle Village in Aurora.  If you go in, ask for Andrea and tell her Robyn sent you.

I'd also recommend Bike Source. Great supply -- if they don't have it in stock, they can get it from one of their other stores -- very knowledgeable, and Hans is the best around WRT fitting, period.

Oh, Bike Source has a new store open on Colorado and Yale (? I think)! I haven't been in, but I saw them building it. That may be closer to you, but you probably couldn't ask for Hans.

I second Bicycle Village. First class treatment has made me a repeat customer, maybe a hundred times! More bikes than Bike Source, and there are more employees to greet you and offer help. I am still amazed that I walked into Bike Source twice trying to buy a bike, with a pile of Benjamin's and nobody offered help. period. I could have walked out with all of the tri inventory and nobody would have bothered to notice!

I hate it when I walk into any gear shop but especially a cycling shop and nobody is around to help.  Sometimes I wonder if for me it's because I don't have the typical cyclist's body but nevertheless, I may not be buying a $5000 bike right now but you never know when and I can't tell you how many shops I've been in where they just ignore me.  BV has taken wonderful care of me this summer.  I do group rides out of there 1-2 days per week so they know me and I get friendly smiles every time I'm there whether I buy nothing, a few gels or more expensive items.  I've gotten great comments on my ride (a LeMond Buenos Aires, not purchased there) and they're always willing to help me with little issues like when my saddle was rotating as I rode but I couldn't tighten down.

Another note, they will be doing Tuesday and Thursday night spin classes this winter for I think $5 or maybe $3 can't remember.  For the ladies only, come join the Wednesday night spins starting around Halloween for free!  The leader is fantastic and is one of the key people who got me involved in multisport.

I purchased and fitted at TREADS in Englewood, really great experience.
For little things, I could include in a route to other destinations with baby-trailer, I used TURIN Bicycles(?) on 7th. (although when they're really busy, it's hard to get sales assistance).

I must say i'm surprised so many of you recommended bicycle village.  I went there today (to the aurora location) and was treated HORRIBLY!  It was so bad I actually walked out, and I love bike shops so it takes A LOT for me to walk out!  The guy who helped me knows less about road bikes than I do, which is hard to believe, but beyond that he replied to every one of my questions with an "are you a ?" type of answer.  He didn't listen to a word I was saying about what I wanted, and kept getting out bikes that were nothing like I wanted/needed.  Even after the fit guy told him he'd picked out the way wrong bike for me it didn't get any better.  After I left I went to get lunch and considered going back and asking someone else, but I just couldn't bring myself to walk back in there.  They seemed waaaaay understaffed.  The idiot that was helping me was also working with someone else.  I'm glad others have had good experiences there but you'll definitely never see me there again!

On the other hand, the Denver Spoke (my usual fave), campus cycles, and bikesource have all been awesome!

Ok just in case anyone is reading this, I guess I better tell the rest of the story.  After writing an angry letter to bicycle village on sunday night, they have done a good job of getting back to me and trying to make things right.  On monday I got a call from a manager.  I missed the call but he left a message apologizing for the guy who helped me saying it was his first time ever on the sales floor but that that shouldn't excuse him.  I could tell the guy was new and didn't know his stuff, but the whole reason for going to a place like BV is to talk to ppl who do know their stuff rather than the usual idiots who just want your money.  Anyway, that manager was out today but said for me to call him wednesday and he'll be willing to personally help me pick out a bike.  Today I got an email from Andrea, who is apparently a women's cycling specialist there (and now i see someone here suggested I talk to her from the start....).  She also offered to personally help me pick a bike.  So I may be going back there again tomorrow.  We'll see.  But at least I hate them less now.

Andrea really is fantastic, please give her a chance.  I'm so sorry you had a bad experience at someplace that I recommended.  I credit Andrea with getting me into triathlons and she is studying to become a certified tri coach.  She is great with women, will listen to you, help you pick out something within your price range and is just an all around great person.
