Subject: Wheels for hilly course?

Hello Gang,

My HIM is coming up and i am planning on renting some wheels for it, according to the info that i have the course is a bit hilly, so what rear and front wheels would you suggest? Also if you can recommend any place to rent from ?

I was thinking of rear 1080 front 404

or rear 808 front 404.

The HIM is the Halfmax in Las Vegas , Nevada.

Thank you in Advance

Daremo,

What i would like to hear is each person's choice of wheels for hilly course. The other thread gives me an idea , but i have no clue how wheels work differently.

Thanks anyways

I rode my tubular 999's at Lake Placid this year (on my road bike).  They are actually lighter wheels than my Ksyrium SSC SL clinchers.  My total bike weight (without my full bottle and spare tire) was only 14.9 lbs.  Climbed great and had the advantage of full on race wheels for the downhills and flatter sections.

The difference in going 1080 or 808 on the rear will be negligable from an aero standpoint.  You may as well go full on disc at that point.  I've always said that a 606 set (808 rear, 404 front) is one of the best all around compromises for wheels.  Pro cyclists run 404's or 303's in many of their races, regardless of the terrain because of the aero benefit.

Having a deeper section front throws the crosswinds into play, especially on the descents.  You have more reaction to wind with the front wheel than you do the rear, so a deep front may end up being sketchy if you are doing a 40+ mph descent and get hit with a crosswind.

I would probably recommend an all around set like the 606 combo if you are looking for the best of both worlds on a hilly course.

define hilly. i used a disk and 90mm front at triple T this and last year, and would likely do it again. most tris are not hilly enough to worry about a disk on the rear.

if you are unsure a 606 or similar setup is a safe and fast bet.

The info that i have for the course is based on people that have raced Silverman in Las Vegas, apparently  is the same bile course or almost identical

here is a link for the course, http://www.silvermannv.com/race_details/half_course_description.php... />

personally it does not look too bad to me, but i have no experience with wheels so i need opinions
