Pre-race routine:

woke up at freaking 4am because i found out from chris yesterday that the race started at 5:45 this morning (which is ridiculously early). had a few slices of toast with pb and packed my stuff into the car and picked up chris in EL. once we got to fondulac we drove around until we finally found registration, checked in, and then hurried to get our stuff on and ready to go because we were pushing it time wise lol. got to the start a few minutes before they played the national anthem and then started to wonder what we had gotten ourselves into! there were lots of cyclists but also a good number of triathletes on their tri bikes so we didnt feel totally out of place. didnt see charles benson at all even though i was looking :) and then the start gun fired and we were off!

Comments:

chris and i decided to hang with the peleton as long as we could and it was a blast! the draft off that many people riding makes it soooo easy to just cruise without working hard. the only hard part was trying not to crash with so many people around moving positions and taking turns. the other tough part was not being able to see the road ahead so you really had to trust the group to call out bad spots and hope that you could miss them. we stayed with the group til 40 miles in and were avging about 24 mph with my hr around 140 when we went over some rail road tracks and my back tire went POW! and i was immediately bummed so i pulled off to the left and yelled to chris and he stopped to help me. a couple others had blown tubes too so the sag van stopped and pulled out his pump while we switched the tubes (first time changing the tube on my race wheels, good practice!). by the time we were rolling again it had probly been 7-8 minutes but there was one other guy on a tribike that had flatted that joined us so the 3 of us formed a pace line and took turns taking pulls for 2-3 minutes, it was a blast (but now we had to work lol). we picked off group after group but eventually about 65 miles in i lost chris and our buddy so i ended up riding the last 25ish by myself. i kept catching groups and hoped that someone would hop on my wheel and take turns pulling with me but they all liked their group speed so i ended up not drafting much at all and just pushing myself hard. so without the flat tire time i think i averaged about 23 and had a blast doing it! i just wish i wouldnt have flatted so i could have seen if i could stay with the leaders til the end though! oh well, i can guarantee i will be bike racing more in the future :)
What would you do differently?:

not blow my tire!

I really like how you can roll all these sentences together and just keep the story going when all of a sudden despite not seeing where you were going you got a blown tire and that was after getting out early and had to rush out the door.

You and jszat going to take turns at pacing each other for Moo until the run?

Nice work!  Lets hope you won't need to use your newly-acquired race tube changing skills at IM WI.
