Overall Rank = 194/322

Age Group Rank = 22/31
Pre-race routine:

This was my first triathlon so I didn't really have a pre-race routine. We got there semi-late so everything was done in a hurry.
Event warmup:

Hamstring stretches mainly.
Swim
  • 08m 29s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

I thought I was prepared for the swim portion of the race to be crowded but I never thought it would be that crowded. I started at what I thought was a good pace but I had laggers in front of my doing the back stroke after 50 meters. I also had people trying to swim on top of me at the beginning. I was hit in the face probably 4 to 5 times which flooded one lense of my goggles. Very frustrating time because I know I could have done better.
What would you do differently?:

Next time I will take an outside line in a big wave start like that.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

I was still a little frusterated after the swim so I think I was a little demotivated to run as quickly as I could have.
What would you do differently?:

I need triathlon cycling shoes rather than regular buckle cycle shoes.
Bike
  • 40m 17s
  • 13.6 miles
  • 20.26 mile/hr
Comments:

I noticed some people were really scared to take the corners with any speed. I made a few passes in those turns where people were really slowing. Overall, I really enjoyed the biking course.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of my seat more often.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Oh man! I forgot my garmin 301 and had to turn around just outside the bike exit/run entry. I ran back to get it because it really helps my pace if I'm able to look at it.
What would you do differently?:

Attach my garmin to my bike and put it on then.
Run
  • 09m 25s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 03m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I stopped at mile 2 because I was so thirsty. I could have finished much better if I hadn't done that.
What would you do differently?:

Not stop. Take a bottle of water with me to throw away later.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked in a big circle after getting my medal.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience.

Event comments:

The water probably shouldn't be that cold at the drinking stations along the run. Other than that, a very well organized race.

Great first race!  This was my first tri last year and I know what you experienced on the swim.  It sounds like you did a terrific job of powering through it and making it out of the water.  FWIW, this is the tightest start I've seen and I think it causes the swim to be full contact.  Also, the director mentioned next year they are changing to a larger beach in the park.

Way to go on your first race!

It really was crowded so hopefully next year's race will have some more room for swimming.

Great job.  Amazing the progress made this summer huh.  Keep it up and wish us luck next week.  If the swim in LA is anything like yours was  I think we'll need it.

Good job on your first tri. Way to hang in there on the OWS. It gets a little nutty sometimes.

To be your first tri, you did well! My first tri (1/2m s, 10mi b, 5mi r) took me almost 3 hours, and i thought i was in shape!
