My training is coming along well. School starts back this week so my training schedule will have to get more creative. Last week was a recovery week (with a short race on the weekend) after a big 4 week block with two 100 milers on the bike and long runs progressing up to 18 miles and a few long bricks. I stepped back the mileage last week and needed it. That last 100 mile ride / 4.5 mile run brick took me to my limits mentally and physically. I'm feeling rested at the moment and my motivation is high going into this next build period. I have a 3 hour run tomorrow morning and hope that it is not too laborious. I hope everyone's training is going well. Train smart.

I thought mine was going well until I read Swimshady's post.    I have my first 100 miler this weekend and I'll do a 15 mile run this week, also.  I'm on plan and I'm not hurt, so I'm happy.  Unlike last year, I don't feel run down and tired all the time.  I'm not sure if it's a better plan or a better base but I'm not complaining.

Thought I was on target until I read the previous responses. Maybe my training plan is less strenuous, since the goal is just to finish my first one. No centuries yet, and my longest run so far was 16 miles.

Last week was rough with that darned work thing getting in the way of training. But I'm back at it this week, with a 2:45 ride on Saturday and a 2 hour ride/50 min run on Sunday.

We know the course will not be hilly. Here's to hoping for very little wind too.

Crap! I must be training for a sprint instead of a 1/2. My longest ride so far has been 50, we won't even talk about the run. I'm not too worried about the swim. Fatmouse is right, the course is flat but remember that the last couple of miles on the bike you have to come over a couple of bridges, which are hills, then transition and run right back over those bridges. I plan to do bricks that include these.

hey, what do you all think of training for the full B2B on the elliptical? I've been off of running for two weeks now with a shin/calf injury...not sure whats wrong with me....but I'm getting worried about this race and building my mileage on time. I've never run a marathon before. Biking and swimming are going great though!

My training's going well.  I'm only doing the half, so my longest bike has been 48 and long swims aren't a problem.  Running, well, um, put it like this.  I've actually sat down and done the calculations to determine that as long as I can hold 15 min mile pace, officials won't pull me off the course.

Kymballie:  I would not recommend doing all of your running training on the elliptical.  You're doing the right thing by taking a break from running, but rehab that injury for all you're worth, throw in some hardcore aquajogging to get the muscles moving in a running motion, and ease back into short runs on a soft surface.  When you feel like its better, try to do a couple of long runs before the big day.

You're fitness will be fine from biking and swimming, but you really need to get a couple of long runs thrown in there to practice your nutrition and see that running far hurts but that you can keep going.  I would shoot for a long run of at least 18 miles if you're just looking to gut it out and finish.  20 or 22 would be even better...bearing in mind that you're coming off of injury and can't expect to spring out the door and run 18 right off the bat.

I'm there as far as the swimming goes. Bike and run are a different story. This week is when I start to put in the long rides and runs. I think 65 on the bike and 13 on the run are my farthest to date during this training. I just hope I am ready.

fatmouse - it sounds like you are right on target. I got a little ahead of schedule with my run distance because 1) I was taking advantage of extended morning training with my oldest on summer vacation and 2) I had some short races ahead that I knew would throw me off a bit. I was right ... I had to bag my 3 hr run this morning because my legs were trashed from Sunday's sprint race. I've postponed it until Saturday and hope by then I'm back to form. And I've decided not to race anything except the SC Half before the full ~ just too risky to go super hard on the short stuff.

Does anybody know after the race if they will be bringing our T1 bags from the beach to the battleship? Also, I know they said they were providing transportation to the beach on race morning but do you know if they will be providing any kind of transportation back to the beach after the race?

I am putting a "FOR SALE" sign on my wetsuit just before I leave T1. I will have no reason to go back there.

I'm trying to catch my run mileage up. Keepiing the bike fairly stable and working on time rather than distance. Where I ride, the hills slow you down a bit, and add extra effort.

I'm not a big fan of Heed.  How will they hand up HEED on the bike?  I've never seen it in bottles.

They'll mix it up and hand it out in water bottles. The HIM I did in July handed out HEED and it has taken 6 weeks to get the HEED taste out of the water bottle!! BLAH!!!!

You can get the HEED mix for water bottles. I'm assuming that's what they'll use.

I'm with others on the HEED taste though. I've been trying to work it into my training all summer but I find I drink less than I should. My plan right now is to start the race with the aero bottle full of water and the downtube bottle full of accelerade. Pick up water and one bottle of HEED on the first half, then special needs for another bottle of accelerade to repeat the process.

Then try to survive the run with HEED, water, and coke. And a few gels here and there.

Check your local GNC. Mine stocks HEED but some don't. Easier than ordering online.

I guess I'm in the minority here because I love HEED (especially Lemon Lime) and use Hammer gel for CHO.  I've never used HEED for longer training though, only 2 hours or less as it recommends and don't plan on using it in this race. For longer stuff I use Hammer gel (caffeinated ~ Espresso or Tropical) + H20 + an Endurolyte every 20 minutes on the bike and every 2 miles on the run. Towards the end of the marathon I bet I'll be willing to try anything that looks appealing though.

HEED rocks!  I train very well with Hammer products.  Its very easy on my stomach and it took Musselman triathlon to prove to me that I'd have a better race because of it.

Yummy shtuff

I'm hoping to do B2B in 2009 and have never done that type of point to point race, and my biggest concern was how does all your stuff get back to you, or do you have to go back and find it?

I'm hoping after the finish that I don't have much to do besides hit T2 and had back to the hotel.

When is registration for the 2009 BTB? How quickly did the 2008 race sell out?

I am planning to do my first HIM next year, and the BTB seems to be a good choice. (late in the season, cooler weather, no hills, great location)

Setup opens up all their events for registration the first week of January. Closer to the end of the year they will post the date of when each event opens for registration.

I think both the half and full sold out in less than 2 weeks.

Has anybody rode on the bike course? I was going to be down in Wrightsville in a month or so and was going to plan to ride the course starting somewhere after the battleship and doing the big loop. From the website it is a little difficult to pick out the turns. Any pointers?

I did Over the Mountain this year, which is also point to point. They gave us two trash bags in our race packet, marked with our bib number. One was for the race start site, and I put things like flip flops and warmup clothing in there. The other was for T1, and I put my wetsuit and goggles in there. Volunteers did a great job getting everything back to the Finish site and they organized the bags in nice piles by bib numbre.

The only bad thing was that my wetsuit sat in the blazing sun inside a white trash bag for several hours. It heated up and the rubber stuck together. When I cleaned it later, I had to carefully peel it apart, and now have some small tears in my wetsuit! If I do that race again, I'll retrieve my bags right away and remove them from the hot sun. Seeing as B2B is an ironman (long day), maybe you can get a friend to take care of this for you...?
