This is a 1/3 mile swim that I am concerned about.  How would this work?  Would we swim out to the white then take left to the finish?  Or is the distance the beach to the beach?

Looks like they will make you swim out a little ways to the swim start then swim between the white buoys and then make a left to the beach.

Are you sure it's not a boat start? Some races ferry athletes out on a boat and you jump off to begin. That's what this picture looks like to me. Check the race description. If so, that sounds like a lot of fun!!!

could also be a reef start (do they have those??), knee deep water walk out on a shoal and leave from there.  Boat start would be kinda cool i think.

I looked up the web-site... yeh, it's a little unclear. Looks like either an "in-water" start, or perhaps the start is from a boat or dock. The swim itself looks like you'll go straight between the white bouys, and turn left back to shore at the blue bouy. The real question is - how do you access the swim start. Do you swim out there? Get ferried out there? Fixed or floating dock? If you're concerned and it will ease your mind to know exactly what the swim start will be like, email the race director. They're usually very good about answering questions like this.

Good luck with your first sprint!!

I googled Buzzards Bay triathlon Race Report and found this:

"It was an in-water start. The water was shallow out to the 1st buoy, which was where we’d start. You could walk about 2/3s of the way to that buoy, but I swam. ... Our wave started ...".

So, sounds like it is shallow and you walk out there.

Are you planning to wear a wetsuit? If so, you'll be amazed by how little effort you need to put into treading. You can relax and pretty much stand upright in the water with a tiny bit of arm movement occasionally to stay afloat. My first tri had a deep water start like this. You get a lot of time to swim out so you can take it nice a slow, then we only had to tread for a couple minutes.

Good luck and have fun!

I don't know what anybody else thinks, but it looks like it's against the current too, the way the water is going in the pic.  Hopefully it'll be going the other way on race day!  Good luck!

Thanks everybody.  Yes I do plan to wear A WETSUIT.  So a wetsuit does help you stay a-float?  Does it help with the swim.  The idea of a deep water start just scars the heck out of me...

The wetsuit will float you fairly easily.  It helps with the swim because it brings your legs closer to the surface with less effort, so you create less drag and have more energy.

You will be fine with a wetsuit. In fact..it will probably give you even more confidence..as once you can't touch, the wetsuit will keep you floating..and that should give you some added reassurance (this assumes you are using a tri-wetsuit!). Plus..while you are floating out there...you can dip your head in the water, get used to the darker water, etc. Just a little warm up time until the horn goes.

You will be fine. Enjoy it.

No worries!  Even at high tide the water will not be above your head.  At low tide you would not be able to swim there.  We will probably be able to walk out to where the start is.

If you feel like you are not in good shape just roll over on your back and put your hand in the air.  You will get help in seconds.  You are very safe.  Good luck and make sure you open you eyes.

Have you done a swim in your wetsuit? You can float in them without doing anything.

Lots of BTers I think are doing this..touch base with them. Read race reports from last year.

Have fun!

Have you been out to see how deep it is.  It might be standing depth there.  So, you can walk out.
