Total Time = 5h 22m 39s
Overall Rank = 108/460
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 20/64
Pre-race routine:

Left home at 3:45 a.m. for 2 hour drive to race site. Ate on the way, got set, stretched, biked - no swim warm up.
Swim
  • 31m 1s
  • 2310 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Where did the chop come from? The middle of the course was very choppy. The wave starts were done so that one participant left every 3 seconds which actually was really good since you started with an accurate chip time. It was wetsuit legal at 77 degrees and I can't stand them so again I did not wear one. I'm glad others were able to wear them though, really beneficial for swimmers who aren't as confident.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I would have liked to have had a better time but it isn't worth expending the extra energy to gain 2-4 minutes
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Fairly long run if you have done PM races before but I conserved my energy.
Bike
  • 2h 41m 21s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I really concentrated on backing off and conserving so I could survive the run. Lots of liquid and nutrition. I tried Elixer electrolyte replacement tabs in my aerobottle for the first time. They are made for Camelbaks and WORKED GREAT. They self mix when dropped in water so once my aerobar was empty, I dropped another tab in, waited for a bottle exchange and refilled. Despite the heat I have to think that, along with 6 Endurox kept me from cramping on the run. Good product - highly recommend it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Again, controlled T2 not too fast but acceptable.
Run
  • 2h 06m 16s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Able to run between every aid station, walk them to rehydrate and get ice. Every aid station had plenty of Gatorade and water and ice. Later they had GU, pretzels, animal crackers and bananas.
What would you do differently?:

I was comfortable not pushing too hard just seeing how it went on my first 1/2. I now know I can survive it and will push my pace a bit.

Thanks, I did much better than I expected and up to this point my longest run ever was one 8 mile run early in the summer. I just don't enjoy it much but I do know where I can make up alot of time with some serious training this winter.

Maybe if you had a decent bike instead of a wal-mart special you would have had a better time?
