Subject: Chocolate Milk Post Recovery, Was This OK?

So today I decided to try chocolate milk as a post workout recovery. My workout wasn't too long and I'd say the intensity was a 7 or 8 out of 10. I rode about 31 miles in just over an hour and a half. I didn't eat anything before I started and I had one bag of shot blocks and 50oz of water during the ride.

Afterwards, I went to Safeway and bought the store brand chocolate milk. I wanted 1% but they only had 2%. Here is the nutritional breakdown for 2 cups:

Calories:    400

Total Fat:         10g

Sat. Fat:            6g

Cholesterol:     20g

Sodium:           460mg

Total Carbs:     62g

Sugars:            60g

Protein:            20G

Normally I'd never put this in my body but I've read good things about chocolate milk for recovery and I've been using accelerade but I'm just about out of it and thought I'd give this a try. My garmin said that I burned over 2,000 calories and after an hour plus workout would be the only time to consume something like this.

Other then trying to get it in 1%, was this ok for post workout recovery? How much do you usually drink and how does the nutritional breakdown compare to what I consummed?

Thanks!

That looks pretty decent. From what I have read, your body can only process about 20 grams of protein in an hour. So your two cups of Choco milk is about spot on.

The supposed ideal is 4 grams of carbs to 1 of protein. Your drink is 3 to 1. Close enough.

Hope it tasted good.

It was really sweet and I washed it down with a lot of water!

It's gonna take some time to get over the idea that it's "bad" for you but it does serve a purpose as a post workout recovery. I was blown away by the amount of sugar in it.

When do you usually take it, for anything over an hour?

For me depends on how intense the workout is. A hard hour, sure would take it then. Easier work out, maybe hour and half to two hours.

Let your body tell you. If you feel drained, or dead legs after the work out take it.

Yes its got a bunch of sugar in it. Look at your recovery drink. Any ingredient that ends in ose is probably a sugar. Dextrose, Fructose, sucrose are all fancy names for sugars. Maltodextrin (sp?) is also a sugar.

It looks ok to me. I sometimes buy the single servings of Horizon Organic reduced fat chocolate milk after a long run that ends more than 30 minutes from home and it's got a similar nutrition content, only half the size. If you're home and want to avoid some of the sugar, you can make it with Hershey's reduced sugar syrup. It tastes the same as the regular. I drink chocolate milk after most run workouts since I can't stomach food for quite awhile. And it's nice to be able to justify drinking chocolate milk!

Chocolate Milk is actually said to be the 'best' sports drink. Better than Gatorade or Powerade.

After a hard/long workout my preferred recovery drink is either 2% chocolate milk, or chocolate soymilk.

It actually agrees with my stomach better and makes me feel better than accelerade or the other options.  I wouldn't use it after every single workout (cause as already stated it is high in sugar and in fat) but as a recovery re-fueling option - I think it works really well.

You can make the chocolate milk yourself if you don't like it so sweet.  I find that the store bought brands are at least twice as sweet as a make at home.

I make my own too. I think the ready made ones have a big deal of added sugar.

I drink it all the time!  Skim milk and non-fat chocolate syrup.  It creates the "perfect" ratio of carbs to protein.

Only slightly off topic, but.... your Garmin sounds like something needs to be adjusted?  2000 calories in an hour and a half at 20mph?  Most estimates I've seen show that we burn 600-900 cal/hour on the bike for a decent effort like that.  So you're looking more at 1200-1350 calories.  Minus 200 for the bag of shot blocks, and you were only down 1000~1200 calories from your start.

All that said, I use chocolate milk at home occasionally for post-exercise recovery.  It's fantastic for you.

In 2006 The University of Indiana actually did a study concerning Milk as a recovery drink and found it very succesful. Even more so than Endurox, siting the milk sugar was more readily absorbed. Further it commented on the need for more vitamin D which we know is found in milk. I'm sure if you google it you can get all the answers you need to put you mind at ease and drink away.  Enjoy! but remember to wipe off the milk mustache!

Drink it almost daily if work-out over an hour or so. I mix the milk & chocolate myself and add a scoop of Whey Protein (20 grams). Not sure of that is overdoing it with Protein, but my recovery has always been great day after.

I am also trying to keep weight on (good problem to have) and need the extra calories after the workout so use 2% milk...

Is there a reason for chocolate milk as opposed to regular milk?

 More carbs I'd assume.

ARE YOU QUESTIONING THE POWER OF CHOCOLATE???

My guess is it's that chocolate milk is sweeter, thus boosting the carb:protein ratio to the "optimal" 3:1. Some folks put a teaspoon or so of sugar in their white milk to accomplish the same.

Thanks!

I would never question the power of chocolate, and in fact place great stock in its power in all other forms. I just for some reason don't like chocolate milk and was wondering if I could try this with regular milk instead.

I'll have to check that out. What would I look for on the garmin that would make my calories be too high?

I rode for 1:39 and covered 31 miles averaging 18.68mph. If I enter that info into my fitday journal it says that I burned 1,641 calories so something has to be double checked. Thanks!

I tried the chcoloate milk thing after several mtn bike races and intense brick workouts last year.  Each time I go sooooo nauseated.  Must be the milk part.

If you have the time and access to your kitchen, a blended drink of skim milf, fresh fruit, ice, and protein powder is a much better option, IMO.
And I agree that your Garminn is way off on calculating calories.

I use it all the time.  Venti non-fat hot chocolate from starbucks.  you get a good source of  protien and very little fat, with a little sugar mixed in so you don't bonk after the workout.

I mix the calorie countdown chocolate milk with skim milk and it tastes great and cuts way down on the sugar.

And maybe on the benefit. Low sugar=low carbs=no magic 3:1 ratio.
