Oh boy. The joy of Sept races. This is why i do no beach races!! did you hear they chopped Diamondman from 56 to 39 miles? crazy...

I'm praying for you guys. I know its lots of folks' first half...

I just don't want them to make it an effing duathlon.  13.1 is enough for me.

that happened in my first half. They had to cancel the swim at Diamondman due to a sewage leak.  Oh, after I had swam in the pond for 30 min the day before.  Changed it to an 8k followed by the 13.1.  Brutal.

I would prefer 5k .. 8k/13.1 is a boat load of running .. if I wanted to do that I would sign up for a marathon

Oh this race is starting to go from "[relatively] easy flat HIM" to having EPIC written all over it.  I hope we get in all 3 disciplines at the right distances.  As long as I still get that, I say bring it on Ms. Hannah!

This will be my first HIM also. I don't care much about the weather, but having the winds hold off till the bike/run would be nice. I dread the idea of a HIM duathlon. I would rather swim though the hurricane and have a great story to tell. But I also don't want anyone to get hurt.

On a slightly different note, Hanna seems to just be meandering around down in the Caribbean so maybe it will delay it a bit.

Well the predicted temp is almost 10 degrees cooler than the scorching 94 that was predicted for saturday earlier this week. That HOT day is now on Sunday (sorry oly runners). I think the storm is stalling a bit, though frankly we don't need to be in the epicenter of it to get some nasty weather.

Fingers crossed.

I'm staying at the Comfort Inn if I'm not mistaken.  No idea where that is.

I'd love to meet up for dinner with anyone who's interested on Friday night.

Meeting up sounds fine to me.

I'm going to have dinner Friday night at Sal's by Victor I think - lots of pasta choices and reasonably priced... I was thinking around 6:00???

This assumes there is not a race-sponsored pre-race dinner.  I haven't heard about it, so I assume there isn't one.

If any BTers and family/friends would like to be added to the reservation, list your name and number attending here... I'll call and make a reservation Thursday evening:

I leave Richmond around 5 on Friday, won't get to Williamsburg till late.  I'll be there Saturday morning wearing a pink baseball cap with a white ribbon tied on back.  Just yell Zipp and I'll be answering.  (my daughter ...a spitting image of me) is also volunteering so if you see a 12 yr old with braces near you it's mini-me (Carrie)

She's doing the Oly on Sunday (I have a sneaking suspicion we are all going to get an email any moment that the Oly and HIM will be run simultaneously on Sunday due to weather on Saturday... no facts to support this whatsoever so don't assume I know anything... just what I would do if I was R/D and the host city government was willing to be flexible).

Though I'm not racing in this event, there are a few of my tri club members who are. So, I'm watching the weather closely for them. And unfortunately at present, Tropical Storm Hanna is forecast to be over the SE VA area at 2 PM on Sat. If the storm follows the forecasted track, the forecast weather graph for race day has rain, heavy at times, with possible thunderstorms and winds out of the east at 20 mph. Those winds increase to 25-30 mph with gusts to 40 come near 2PM. Epic - yeah, but hazardous too. With an east wind like that, you can expect wind waves with whitecaps on the James River, not the best swim conditions. The bike and run won't be much more fun either. As I'm telling our club members participating, be safe and make the smart decision. There will be other races. I'm sure the race directors will also be closely monitoring as well.

For those that wish to follow Hanna's progress, forecasts are available at the National Hurricane Center website - http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml. Forecasts are updated every six hours. Hopefully, Hanna will recurve earlier and not affect the race. If that happens, good luck to all and wish I was there with ya!

Well, glad I'll be done by 2 PM, then.

Seriously, thanks for the update.  I keep checking NHC's website at 11, 2, 5, 8, each time they have updates, basically.  I noticed that Setup closed the race for registration... the cap was 800, they closed it at 620 or so.  Not sure what that means...

Since I leave for a 3 week backpacking trip right after this race (where I will lose a ton of bike fitness), this is my shot to get in my 70.3 this year... so I'm really praying on this one as even a postponing of the race won't work for me.

If not, the wife and I have already begun plans for me to do the three disciplines/distances from home on saturday in my own little personal race with her as the race director.  Anyone up for Odenton-Man Half?

Hey Mr. race director - why don't you run them both (HIM and Oly) on Sunday????

I forgot to mention that if you want to see the NWS forecast for Williamsburg and the hourly weather graph I mentioned, go to http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/akq/. Then click on the dot marking Williamsburg on the small map. That will get you the text forecast for the day. To see the hourly graph, scroll to the bottom of the Williamsburg forecast page. You'll see an area labeled "Additional Forecasts & Information" and click on the "Hourly Weather Graph" link. You'll get a 2 day graph of various weather elements. There's a button in the upper right that allows you to go 2 days forward. That will get you to Sunday's forecast. You can also click on the "Tabular Forecast" link instead of the graph link and this will give you raw numbers/text of the weather elements. You can move ahead 2 days with this one as well. BTW, the links are having some problems this morning, perhaps due to increased interest. NWS typically also updates about every 6 hours as well unless conditions warrant otherwise.

This morning's forecast track has Hanna moving a bit more east than the last I saw but not by much and that's just the projected center of the track "cone". Hanna's still having some problems with organization but it's been tenacious in staying together. Plus it's got a fairly large circulation. But, it's not expected to intensify much before reaching the US.

Well, keep watching and again, hope for the best for all who signed up!
