I'm thinking about getting some coaching help for my swimming...maybe 6 or so hour long sessions. ANyone have a guess at what it might cost me? I'm looking at using a local guy who helps out a few people on the side so it's not his main job. $30/hour seem reasonable? He's doing an 8-hour workshop split over 2 days for $150 but that's a group thing so I would expect provate sessions to be more expensive.

That is MORE then reasonable. A good coach should have your stroke figured out within minutes and be able to suggest improvement skills and technique guidance.

My private sessions with my swim coach run about $40/hour. Worth every penny.

It depends on the credentials of the coach and his experience.

My swim coach charges $75/hour but I used him like I used my golf coach.

I would get coached and then take about 2-3 weeks to "practice" what he told me to practice, then go back again and refine more on my stroke, then take another 2-3 weeks to myself, then go back again.

I did only 3 lessions and it was a HUGE success.  Now I get pointers here and there from the Masters coach when I can make it to the Masters swimming sessions...

I am starting with a coach on Monday. She is charging $60/hr. I plan on doing what Steve did. In fact, she suggested it. Her credentials are very impressive and she is a TI coach. I have no idea if it is a reasonable price but I am so desperate for an improved stroke that $100/hr. would be worth it to me. ;-)

I've been chatting with this guy via email a little about TI and such when I was interested in his workshop (schedule conflict) and here is a snippet...

I am VERY familiar with the Total Immersion Techniques. I
worked with Terry Laughlin at the U.S Military Academy. I do some of his
drills. But I also concentrate a lot on breathing, which TI doesn't cover at
all. Many people who are weak swimmers are not relaxed in their breathing.
But I also cover proper body position as does TI. I will do filming also.

So he sounds like he know's what he's doing as far as I can tell.

My coach is a member of a college swim team. Their team offers swim lessions for $20/30 min. Well worth the money!

When picking a swim coach, just like when picking a tri-coach, remember that a good swimmer does not make a good coach, but a good coach makes a good swimmer.

What I find funny is my coach can tell what my arms are doing under water, and sometimes I can't even tell. Good luck with picking a coach!
Happy Training!

Peace.

As an aside, where do you go to find a coach?

I just stumbled on this guy. He posted on the running/tri forum through the local shop that he was planning to hold a couple swim workshops specifically for triathletes.

Master's coach, $2 a session. I'm fortunate enough to swim on a VERY small team (3 people), so it's like I have a personal trainer.

Ask your swim buddies who they recommend.  Usually the best swim coaches don't advertise becuase they don't need too, they have too many clients from referrals.

Perhaps you see someone at your pool who swims well as ask them for a recommendation!

Contact a local tri club and ask for a recommendation. The club may have multiple coaches for you to contact, especially in Boston. My tri club has a swim clinic so I emailed the coach of the clinic. She does not do personal coaching but recommended a coach to me.

Here is a link to clubs in New England:  http://www.usat-ne.org/triathlon_clubs.htm

It may not be on a par with a personal coach but I've been getting a lot of help from a "stroke improvement" class at the local YMCA. Since I was already a member the cost was free and it's not bad even for non-members. I've just been getting started so it's all I can handle so far to work on everything the instructor has suggested. I doubt a personal coach would have done much more good until I have some of the basics worked out. Some of the other people in the class seem to be much more advanced swimmers, and several of them have mentioned wanting to sign up for this guy's class again. Some kind of group coaching might be an option if you can't find a personal coach.

The local high school swim team coach give me advice off and on and he is free. I coach his daughters in track and cross country, so we are friends anyways.

Maybe a local college or high school has some coaching staff that would help for free. You never know until you ask.

But I also concentrate a lot on breathing, which TI doesn't cover at all.

speaking as someone who recently turned purple after doing 30 mins of fairly good TI form, this is a plus!

really, though, TI does incorporate breathing, i'm just not good at that part of the form quite yet. i had a ti coach last season and she was about $30 an hour. it was bit less for semi-private lessons, so i went that route. it was usually only 1-2 other swimmers, so it worked out really well. as i did drills, she would talk to another swimmer about their form and unique issues. when they were off doing drills, i would get the same time with her. worked out great. i also think it was money well spent. i was already a strong swimmer, but was coming back to doing laps after years of not doing them, so it was great to start fresh with some expert coaching.

ps. the other nice thing about having a coach who is familiar with working w/ triathletes (as mine was) was having a new resource for questions. she also set up mock-tris for us, as well as group open water swims, to practice transitions, passing, drafting, getting and elbow in the nose, etc.

Hey Steve,

Your a little off, but not by much. I'll give you a clue.

He set the national High School mile record in Eugene OR. a few years back with a 3:53. He went on last year to win the US National Championship in the 1500m. At the Olympics, some say he had a chance to medal, but choked big time. Any ideas? He is the guy in the white jersey.

What do you mean I resemble him? Only my running does, I have more hair than him. HA HA HA

  • ..and you resemble a chair?????HA HA HA

Picture's fuzzy, but based on your clues I'd guess Alan Webb

Edit: a little google and I'm sure it's Webb: http://www.usatf.org/athletes/bios/Webb_Alan.asp

    That's CHEAP!

I typically charge between $65-$80 per 45 minute session, depending on pool location and fees.
Some of the TI "certified" coaches I hear are charging $100 or more per lesson.

Run with the $30, as long as the coach knows what he's doing!

You may also find one on my website: Coach Finder

    Good luck!
